If you look for the weather report on the BBC website for "Pattya" you wont find it, if you look for the correct spelling "Phattaya" it is there! SOME of the road signs have always been correct! When I first used to drive down to Pattaya 20 + years ago they used to cause me some consternation!

I wouldn't look for Pattya but for Pattaya. That's how it has been spelled for many decades, and that's how it is pronounced. The BBC Weather website is no spelling authority in my world.

Since when is Phattaya correct? I've never seen that anywhere. The new road signs point to Phatthaya. Do they have to be replaced again?

Despite what you could believe, the Royal Thai General System of Transcription is no more official than any other. In fact, who could believe anything could be really official here..

And one more point, they also can do spelling mistakes, and so not use the same name on both side of the same road... In English that's obvious, but in Thai too.... Ask your GF/BF/etc

Phattaya is the more correct spelling. The H indicates a strong P sound, as is the common pronunciation. Otherwise it would be a BP sound. Hence Phuket and Thai etc.

In my experience Thais like to use a syllable which ends with a vowel. Hence Pa -Ta - Ya.

On a slightly separate, but related note, it's amusing to listen to the pronunciation for Sophon Cable.

Lots of Farangs say So-Fon, and almost all the Thai people say So-Pon.

Interesting, we have now another "correct" spelling for Pattaya.

Note that your experience is misleading, there are many words in Thai that end on consonants. The difference is between syllables end end on a sound with voice (vowel or consonants like 'n' for examples) and syllables that end with 'dead' letters ('d' for example). You'll learn all this when you learn Thai formally, i.e. in a school.

So-pon is the correct pronunciation (if you read Thai, you'll agree), So-Fon is the logical pronunciation if spelled with "ph". My point again.

BTW, what do you mean by "almost all Thai people say "So-Pon" - are there any any people who mispronounce it So-Fon? That would not only mean that that Thai person cannot read Thai but also that he/she does not know the popular male first name after which the cable company is named.
