1. Before, if I highlighted some text and right clicked I would have the option to search for that term in Google.com , now , totally out of the blue, the search is done in ASK.com

2. Before as well, if I right clicked on any website, the option for a short link ,something like

go.linkxyz or that , would be given.

It's gone!!! One of my most often used features for references in typed text is simply gone!!

Back to the endless links like

I search to no end for a solution. Do got one?

It sounds like you installed an application that modified your browser settings.

On the left side of the search box, there is a down arrow. Click it and then "Manage Search Engines..."

Move Google to the top of the list, that will make Google the default search engine again.

Install this add-on:

https://addons.mozil...on/menu-editor/

It will allow to edit what is displayed in the right click (Main) Context Menu

I would recommend that you install a Firefox backup tool. (BackupFox, MozBackup, or FEBE add-on) to periodically backup up your Firefox profile and you can easily restore it should this happen in the future.

Your browser is often a target for Mal-ware or Ad-ware.

It may have also been installed as a Windows app. Remove it from the Add/Remove programs in the Windows Control Panel if it exists

Nasty piece of crap! :bah:

type about:config and filter Ask

reset

That seems to be it, putting this into google showed at least that there is a vast number of annoyed Firefox users who updated to F.4 and got the same problem.

Now, can you pls be a bit less cryptic for an amateur= where exactl do I type

type about:config and filter Ask ??

Has anyone figured out what the advantage of ask.com are supposed to be?

Last not least= how to get the link shortner via right click back??

Once inside the about:config window, type "Ask" in the filter bar to display only those entries related to "Ask.com".

right click and select reset

Telepathy............. thanks for patience, I did right click and edited to google.com

BTW, one more odd thing. This Acer was bought in Germany, therefore I assume the Firefox was the German version, later changed to English version. At the same time the right click link shortener disappeared, the English version switched back to German, without my doing.

To test my theory, how can I delete the present Firefox and replace it with an English Firefox, at the same time preserving my bookmarks?

no need to edit; a reset will do

download the language version

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html

simply reinstall it; settings will be retained

at the same time, backup your bookmarks just in case

Ok, I read you alright but couldn't figuer out the reset in the German right click. I reset but this bloody thing is still using Dont ASK me !!

Will restart it plus load the English version.

you all made my day, thanks a million.

I got the US version of Firefox and the right click search goes to google.com

However, much to my regret, the right click link shortener seems to have died an unannounced death. It was so helpful, One could even short link a specific photo from a Picasa album, really handy.

Thanks again for hanging in!!

Shorten URL is not a standard part of Firefox. There are many URL shorteners for Firefox.

Is this the one you are talking about?

If so install this add-on:

https://addons.mozil...ogle-shortener/

Or was it this one?

If so, install this add-on:

https://addons.mozil...on/shorten-url/

Some of the other link shorteners are not FF6 compatible, so it may have been disabled. You can check the add-on manager to see if any add-ons are disabled because of incompatibility.

I have an add-on called UrlbarExt which provided this service. It is not compatible with FF6. It said "Shorten this URL". If you have it you can make it compatible with FF6. This link to learn how to do it:

Interesting thread ... thanks! I was looking for a repalcement for IE 9 (lower task bar has just stopped working and I'm being 'Binged' to death) and Firefox looks like the best option?

I installed Google Chrome, but it does not seem to be a fully featured program?

Firefox did take care of that annoyance , in your above link it reads

This sometimes happens without specific permission to install the add-on whichs has been a problem in the web browser for quite some time. Mozilla recently announced that they would put an end to automatic third party add-on installations in Firefox.

I ran a portable download manager (which added itself to Firefox) and it screwed up Firefox :-)

When downloading other software be careful to read what it is installing, it usually asks you do you want it, obviously you just clicked yes without reading the box first, then the next page said "Do you wish to install", and you clicked yes again.

Not a problem with Firefox, it is just being too quick to click the boxes when downloading.

Gosh, you're so right. Was swearing like hell when I suddenly had again the right click "ask." instead of google. What the f.. is going on? You gave the answer = I downloaded the English version which icludes "ask".

So back to "reset".

I will NOT give up!!

Now I tried

about:config but only one of the strings can be reset to google.

There others stay ASK, modify also doesn't work

See jpg

Did you go into the Windows Control Panel and remove the "Ask Toolbar" and go into the Firefox extension manager and remove the Ask.com add-on if they were present?

I have a slightly different, though perhaps related problem.

Running Firefox 6.0 .

When I open Firefox, it goes to my designated Startup Page - no problem, however, starting a few weeks ago when I open a new - blank - Tab it opens showing a page with a Search Box "powered by Ask", instead of the Google.com webpage I used to have.

OK, it's a minor irritation and I simply go to Google from my Bookmarks but it would be better if I could change the settings.

Any advice?
