Shakedown By Police At Ekamai Bus Terminal

Ever since a mate warned me about shakedowns at Ekkamai bus station in 1993, I have been dying for it to happen to me. Alas I must just look to clever for the coppers

Lucky the grammar police weren't there they wouldn't think you to be "too clever".

But from now on if I've any money in my pockets it'll be time to get off at On Nut!

If there were <deleted> police on this site, then i suggest you would have been locked up long ago

Ah now i remember why i stopped visiting this website.

See this crap alarms me because I have a daily dose of 300MG of Tramadol which for the the benefit of TV members who dont know what it is its a seriously strong painkiller and actually synthetic Heroin.

It goes without saying that I have the original box supplied from pharmacy but still concerns me with these fruits at the bus station ??

Good points in the thread about business cards of a lawyer and getting camera out.

If youve a prescription you'll be ok i presume, keep your doctors number in your phone just in case.

Well dont have the perscription per se as I'm given 6 months worth at a time from UK (am sure you shouldn't be able to get this much, but whatever) so only have the outer box which does have my name on, but on the basis that these BIB probably cant read.......

I say you shouldn't have this much in one go as I understand Smack heads will do ANYTHING to get hold of these tablets as it apparently stops them rattling.

Do like me.

Just moved to a new house. The three houses around me are high ranking police officer.

Will offer them good steaks and get peace of mind in reward and maybe they will side with me if some of our neighbors end up having annoying dogs.

Never had trouble with the police but always had a police friends number in my phone.

What's this fag butt scam, someone explain please in a PM is OK.

the fag butt scam is operated by thai cops who haunt the heavily touristed areas and look for unwary smokers dropping their cigarette ends on the ground, not in the bin or other receptacle. they then pounce waving an englsih language leafelt explaining that littering is illegal in thailand and punishable by a fine of (i think) 1000baht (might be 2000).

you are then faced with the prospect of bargainging your way out of it for as little as you can.

i was totally skint when i got caught in this scam (end of soi 12 on sukhumvit). the copper actually pursued me into the back of the 7-11 shop there and dragged me out into the street and pointed to the still smoking butt that i'd tried to chuck into the bin but missed. he then brandished his leaflet to which i replied "i've only got 150 baht to my name!", he glanced around to make sure nobody was looking and snatched the 100b note and told be to be on my way.

thai cops! <deleted>*king ar**holes the lot of them.

This is a well known place to get searched by the police. They're looking for things like Viagra or other controlled drugs without a valid prescription.

If you had any of these in your luggage they would have demanded money from you. This has been going on for years.

Then all they have to do is walk down Sukhumvit a bit and they'll find more than they can shake a big stick at on the street stalls lining the road.

They know the stalls are selling fakes thats why they're not interested,

No problem then, when the police stop you with your V you just tell them 'it's fake, I bought it at the street stalls on Sukhumvit' and they have no reason to detain you.

The Butt patrol guys are not cops. If you were caught out littering, especially since there are ample signs warning of the penalties, you deserve to pay whatever fine they levied.

I doubt they "dragged you" anywhere. Lighten up on the hyperbole and stop making crap up and might become a little more credible.

yet ANOTHER reason NOT to go to pattaya

You may not be familiar with Thailand too much, but Ekamai is an old bus station in Bangkok. Buses depart and arrive there from many provinces and towns East of Bangkok.

Now you know.

Ever since a mate warned me about shakedowns at Ekkamai bus station in 1993, I have been dying for it to happen to me. Alas I must just look to clever for the coppers

Ha, I felt the same for years. Then finally it happened a couple months ago at Ekamai. They quickly lost interest though, and I had nothing much to search. (There were other people with big bags, and they quickly moved on to those. Then I just left. )

It's not my theory so I'd suggest petermik try it out.

Probably looking for drugs. I've been stopped and searched about half a dozen times in Bangkok. They usually go through everything. Pocket, wallet, they once took off my shoes and looked in them. Nothing ever happens, they thank me and go.

I know its irrelevant as theyll do what they wish, but is it illegal to stop someone for no reason and search them?

I don't know what the rules are on searching people on the street. Although I don't like it they've always been professional and left me alone after determining I had no drugs. One time had a fairly large amount of cash on me as well, and no passport and was worried I'd be hit up for not having it, but they were only interested in looking for drugs.

Actually now that I think of it, one of my friends was searched for drugs once and had his passport with him which on was several days overstay. They gave him instructions on how to do a border run and sent him on his way after searching him, they could have really screwed him if they wanted

Thanks for that you two, I still am learning something everyday, I don't smoke but it's still nice to know things.

My cop friend is a one of the good guys I guess, and the police in our village are a great bunch.

ooh clever clogs! it WAS a copper who accosted me in the back of 7-11, he insist i leave the premises immediately, although admittedly he didn't physicall drag me out of the shop(my bad). but every other word of that account is true. and there were no sign advertising fines.

Unless they tell you to down a couple and you develop a raging boner in a crowded bus terminal. :D

Or just use common sense to realize that rubbish belongs in a bin. You don't don't have to be a rocket scientist to have a little common courtesy. Personally, I think 2,000 baht is too little.

Anti littering campaigns would be a LOT more effective if they set the fine at 100 baht and gave it out to Thai people instead mainly targeting foreigners in a handful of tourist areas. They should set the fine really low and each officer should be handing out a hundred tickets a day. They could even pocket it all, as long as it was enforced.

Frankly it's beyond me how anyone can be dumb enough to still get caught out by the cigarette end scam as it's been blasted all over the internet and has been mentioned in most guidebooks since the early 2000s.

Personally when I saw some fool getting aggro from the busys and then read about it in Trink, I just stopped smoking on the street in that area.

Most hops in that area are short anyway e.g. from Soi 4 to Soi 7 (wink.gif) so why not just wait until you reach your next destination.
