webfact Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Army chief urges govt to launch new measures in South By The Nation More anti-insurgency measures are needed to ease the situation in the South and this responsibility lies with the new government, Army chief General Prayuth Chanocha said yesterday. Though the government could impose curfew and ensure strict enforcement of the law, it would not look good and might instigate opposition by the general public, he said. He added that so far, the military has been able to control the resistance and stop rebels from launching largescale attacks. Prayuth added that more Army rangers, instead of regular troops, would be deployed in the deep South on a more contingent and flexible basis. The Army intensified their operation of protecting Buddhist monks, especially when they go out in the mornings to seek alms, after intelligence reports said the insurgents were now focusing on "soft targets", the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) unit based in Pattani said. Government teachers will also be heavily protected in the entire region, not just Pattani, it added. ISOC has increased security for monks and teachers following a recent bomb attack in which several soldiers and a novice monk were wounded. Meanwhile, a rubber planter in Narathiwat was shot dead yesterday possibly by insurgents. Two men on a motorcycle gunned down Humbali Addulloh as he was making his way home after dropping his child to school. -- The Nation 2011-08-25
