meatboy Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 can anyone please explain my dogs behaviour,[ALASKAN MALAMUTE] last week i bought a leg of lamb,i cut it up and cooked some, during this my dog started to act very strange, although he was born in thailand he seems to know where is habitat is,he can pick up the scent of everything so i thought,he raced around the garden checking in all the bushes, then he came to the back door of the kitchen,he seemed to have found where the smell was coming from,as the security door is always shut he made his way to the front,he entered the kitchen the same way as if he was stalking something, but also seemed cautious and was backing away.this is the first time he has come across this smell.as he is a desendant from the wolf family nothing has ever frightened him and he always knows if a stanger is in the area he gives out a howl to tell them this is my area.he does love beef, pork, chicken but he would not let me get near him when i offered him a pc.of lovely lamb.this behaviour went on for a few days till the scent of the lamb went,i have looked at what wild animals there are in alaska so could the smell be somewhat near to the bear.i look forward to get an explanation.
surayu Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Maybe the Alamban Malamute thought you were having a meal of his (very) distant cousin? A lamb's leg is similar tho those of the dogs, in shape....dogs gets very protective of their injuried mates.

David006 Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 strange indeed..had a Malamute Shepherd X in tropical Queensland..never tried her with lamb up there but down in Melbourne she would eat neighbors' lamb leg bones when they brought around for her.... best just not bother with the lamb eh..? We have one of our big mutts here that won't eat pork bones...go figure!
bina Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 our lhasas and us ate gazelle the other day (shot as doing damage to vineyards and got stuck inside the fenced area, , kept jumping back in over the fences... they loved it. they dont really like beef. unless its cooked. but the gazelle they adored. this is the first time they got gazelle since its illegal to hunt them accept thru the nature protection culling people that work with the farmers here... theyve eaten wild pig, pork, chicken duck, whatever... but they prefer coooked... i think its a matter of strong smells that they recongnize from infancy; new things are tastes to be aquired. our two eat stuff that other dogs refuse to touch... dogs do not look at shape of bone and associate with other animals like an other dog. i suspect that most dogs if hungry enough and it was served to them cooked would also eat dog... mine have eaten fox (might have been feral dog for all i know) and cooked porcupine. they refused to eat cow placenta but ive had dogs that used to steal the goat placentas right at birth... a matter of taste just like with humans. my dogs btw eat vun (the thai jelly); my kids refuse to touch it. bina
WarpSpeed Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Wow! Yes very much like my cats have been acting lately! I wonder if there is something they sense that we don't know about, a pending earthquake maybe?? Besides something similar to what you've described they've both been very attentive, hanging very close to my feet, like right now for example while I use the computer, more so then usual and when I'm leaving the house more rubbing a lot and nipping at my feet.. They're both adopted soi kitty's too so maybe even more in tune with the environment?
Cuban Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 Lamb meat does smell - not sure why but I used to like eating lamb - after spending time in Taiwan with a Taiwanese GF I seem to have adopted the dislike of the smell too.
