It may sound like a stupid question, but upon visiting Apple's websites, I was not able to determine if Macs have BlueRay DVD drives.

None of the products am interested in, MacBookPro or iMac give any information about BlueRay and when I try to configure a new machine, no options were give to include a BlueRay drive.

Does someone know more about this?

It doesn't look like it. There are external drives available, not from Apple though. It may have to do with piracy and Steve Jobs being in the movie business?

No Mac's come with Blu-Ray.

I am guessing they are betting on any disk format media dying out in the next 2-5 years.

That may very well be true! All the big DVD rental places in the US have closed their bricks and mortor shops. Netflix is now streaming only.

I would put 50thb on it :)

Actually Sony/Apple/Samsung/LG/Panasonic/Hulu/Netflix and google all know its coming in the relative short term. Hence most of them such as sony and samsung are launching their TV's and Blu-Ray players with internet streaming capability so if the disk format fails a simple software update for netflix/hulu/google or even apple might occur so as not to render your new sony purchase useless.

I would also go as far as saying that cable/satellite tv is also on that relatively short term exit - I would guesstimate that at 10 years from now.

Disk based media within 5 years and cable/satellite tv within 10 years. lets check back on this thread then. If I am correct you all owe me a beer :)

LOL! I owe you a beer for agreeing with you? Yes with clouds going up everywhere it will hsppen sooner than later. The one thing that has been holding streaming video back is the bandwidth required. I remember working at some IT conference years ago making your same prediction. As soon as everyone has fiber to their house, it's a done deal.

How about now ? I've had a Mac Mini for over year and never even placed a CD in the slot...

I have just down graded True Visions to the basic service and rely on Hulu / iPlayer / downloaded movies... The way I watch TV is changing. I've been forced to change the way I watch TV by True Visions lack of decent channels and repetition..

I imagine in the not too distant future many of us will be watching internet TV on demand, choosing to watch the programs we want to watch, when we want to watch them. There will be no need too record movies, they will be stored on servers from which we simply stream our movies.

IMO: Websites such as Hulu outline the future of TV.

The next step is ensuring high quality / high definition web streaming.

Indeed been streaming netflix/apple iTunes and hulu here in Thailand for the last 5 years+.

Mainstream uptake I think is unto 10 years away just now for your average non-tech orientated customer.

Web streaming from Netflix and Hulu is available in HD reliably using usvideo.org, VPN's just don't cut it with the HD streams. Of course apple iTunes movie rentals on apple tv etc in HD are ready to view within 15secs here in Thailand although all be it 720p which is good enough for most.

I have ditched UBC and purchased a Dtv decoder for the better half (฿2,900) and I use BBC iPlayer with Tunnel Blink (£5.00 pm) and UKnova (with Transmission)

UKN is good for MOTD 1&2

How do you do that? When I opened Hulu, it said that Hulu can only be watched from within the US.

And also, with the Internet speeds available in Thailand, especially on a Sunday, how could we possibly watch a movie from a streaming service? It took me 24 hours and 3 attempts to download the new OS Lion and that's only 3.7 GB. Imagine a HD full length movie with 50GB.

I really don't see how this will be possible in Thailand in the short to medium future (10 years).

So I guess I tell my Missus to forget Apple and look for something more mundane. :whistling:

I guess you didn't read the part about using usvideo.org? And I am currently downloading movies and TV series at 450KBps. Full lenght 1080p movies using mkv H.264 compression aren't that big, more like 7GB. And most any avi file I've downloaded looks way better than anything on Truevisions!
