writeshack
Does anyone know the CN for the various types of diesel sold at the pumps in Thailand? I'm wondering if it's worth using a diesel booster in my 3 litre. If the CN is up around 50-55 I'd guess it wouldn't be worth it. I did try out a bottle recently and it seemed there was a difference - smoother, and quicker response.
Kwasaki
Funny you bring this up when I was doing some reading up on fuels. If you say you noticed an improvement in performance it's up to you whether to carry on using it. Diesel engines run well with a CN from 40 to 55 there is no performance or emission advantage when the CN is raised past approximately 55; after this point, the fuel's performance hits a plateau. Bio-diesels have been recorded as having a cetane number range of 46 to 52. Seeing as it is suppose to be very difficult to get measurements. I would imagine that say PTT diesel would be within the range of the said 40 - 55 I would also say it would vary. Anyway ask em !! link below. http://www.pttbluesociety.com/#/contactus If you get an answer I bet it's 55.

Jitar
Did you get any more information on Diesel Cetane Numbers or reach a conclusion for fuel boosters? Last year Shell quoted a Limit of 47 which I assume is a Thai standard minimum, with V Power typical Cetane at 62. I have not seen data from other manufacturers but presumably they would be around 47 or above.
soundman
PTT Diesel is now Euro IV http://www.pttplc.com/Files/Document/energy_mag/51_3/euro4.pdf Euro 4 emission diesel has three properties and qualities as narrated below : 1. An amount of sulphur is reduced to 50 ppm or 0.005%, 7 times lower than that of available diesel. As a result, it helps decrease a quantity of sulphur dioxide released to the atmosphere and lengthen a lifespan of catalytic converter that makes a combustion more complete, leading to a decreased amount of CO and NOx released. 2. An amount of cetane, an indicator used to measure a fuel quality, increases, from not less than 47 to not less than 50. Higher level of cetane results in a more complete combustion, smooth-running engine, effective performance, and decreased exhaust.
Jitar
Apparently all diesel sold in Thailand from 1 Jan 2012 is supposed to be Euro IV. There were some press articles last year about projects at Esso and other refineries in preparation for the change over. I wonder if the Thai government make any change to vehicle emissions testing ?
