I was down on Sukhumvit yesterday and saw the new building going on.  I also looked at yesterday's BKK post and saw the sale prices and the rental rates there.  We are being ripped off particularly in the white ghetto area!!!! Thais don't pay what we do--nowhere near it.  They are taking us for suckers.  I live in a nice furnished apartment in the Chatujak area.  2 bedrooms and a living and dining room with one bath and a small kitchen and a balcony.  I pay 7000bht per month.  Why should things cost so much more in the area that they think all farangs want to live in.  I know---location, location, location.  Don't be sucked in!! If people refused to pay these inflated prices, they would come down fast.

Try the Paholyothin Road area near Ratchada--Rathayothin, in the neighborhood of the Major Ratchayothin Movie complex. There are plenty of apartments and good Condos in the area off Soi 33 to 39.

I live in the Jatujak area too. With the subway and BTS close by, it is easy to get to the centre of town. The area is far enough out of town that you don't get all the tourist hassles. There are also a few farangs living here so it doesn't feel like you are living out in the sticks.

There are plenty of decent apartments/condos around the lower end of Ladprao. Try Vipawadee Mansion on Ladprao soi 8. It's about 5 minutes walk from Pahonyothin subway station. The rooms in there are in the 8,000 - 10,000 baht range.

Easy answer, don't live in white ghetto's. I  live a 25bt 15 min ride from Victory monument and pay 1800bt a month for a large studio in Muang thong. Depends on your needs but if you don't like paying for it just move

We have a place in the same area. Don't spend alot of time there unless we've got business in Bkk, but I feel alot less crowded there. There's great food nearby, and I've yet to have the local shops and vendors add in a "farung tax" on anything. Lots of people sitting outside the buildings in the evenings chatting, drinking, and socialising. All said its a good atmosphere.

Like Toast says, 25bt minibus, hop the BTS and you're in the city in no time. 150-180bt taxi to the airport.

For far less than a place on Sukh. we get a place there, and one in CM.

Besides, if I want to live amongst a bunch of cynical white guys paying outragous rents to their asian landlords I'd have stayed around Vancouver.

How much is the rent for one of those corrugated metal lean-to's along the railroad tracks near Phiyathai?  Looks like an easy stroll into BTS and a great way to learn some of the language.  Don't need a TV, a frig, and can wash at work.

Miami Scum Hotel; nothing that a wrecking ball won't cure

Not far from DM, no noise from aircraft as they fly south to north and viceversa.

For some unknown reason I can't recall the cab fare from entertainment venues but the airport is less than 200.

Don't waste your money on a taxi. There's minibuses at the 7-11 that make the trip just as fast for way less baht, and they are leaving every few minutes during the day.
