The Region 2 Police have announced the arrest of an internationally notorious drug dealer who had a 2-million dollar bounty on his head.

Region 2 Police Commander, Police Lieutenant General Tha-ngai Pratsachaksatru say police have arrested notorious drug dealer Manit Keawmei, in the eastern province of Sa Kaeo.

The suspected seller pleaded guilty after having gone into hiding since August 11.

Police confiscated 100,000 methamphetamine pills and 620 kilograms of the drug ice on September 11 in 2007 in a drug bust that involved drug dealers in Manit's network.

Police Lieutenant General Tha-ngai explained that the dealer is one of the 16 most wanted drug dealers by the United States drug suppression unit.

His bounty was set at two million U.S. dollars, or 60 million baht.

Tha-ngai added that he will work with American authorities to extradite the suspected dealer to be prosecuted in the United States.

Who keeps the reward money?

The bib of course

Although the reward may be why so much cooperation so fast from the BIB, America usually doesn't pay rewards to police or military for doing what they are already paid to do. I may be wrong and I don't know the details but this would be my guess...

Unless there was a citizen involved, a reward will not likely be paid. Rewards don't apply to police. Also have to question this guy being in the top wanted by the "United States drug suppression unit" since I have never heard of such an agency and a quick search of this persons name as being wanted didn't pull up anything I saw online about being wanted or having a reward. His name also doesn't come up on the FBI site being listed as wanted ... http://www.fbi.gov/wanted

Unless a reward is involved, a criminal will likely not be extradited :)

Wouldn't legalizing marijuana dramatically decrease the levels of inmates in thai prisons, violence along the borders, and couldn't it potentially help the Thai economy? Deal with the dangerous drugs.

Easy enough to say there was a citizen involved I.E. family or friend, get a pay out and then share it with the BiB with a deal made.. The BiB says we got a tip leading to the perp and there you have it, a movie plot in another country here just standard business practices..

No they're worse, are you suggesting they could somehow effectively sniff out without equivocation that the citizen in question was not the one who turned in the perp if ALL of the investigating Thai officers who stand to gain from it support his/her claim?? How would that work then? "Well you say he turned him in but we don't believe you so even without proof to the contrary we're not going to pay out"..... That'll go over real well with any future attempts at cooperation I'm certain...

Thanks for the link. Maybe we should use the Submit A Tip button to let them know he is being held by police in Thailand since it doesn't show him being captured yet (they are usually quick to do this). Also interesting is if you look at the last link it says he is wanted in Thailand (see bottom note).

NOTE MANIT is wanted in Thailand for methamphetamine trafficking.

...or caught B) The reward may have been a slight incentive. Why do you think they went after him in the first place? Justice?
