August 30, 201114 yr Does anyone know where I could buy (or borrow/rent) some Imperial allen/hex keys? I have to make a repair to a new mandolin, but need what appears to be a 3/16-inch allen key. I'll happily buy the lender a few beers if I can just find the right tool..... ron
August 30, 201114 yr Try buying the nearest metric key, slighty bigger and file it down to fit, even a good screwdriver that fits tightly in the hexagon will undo it, Good Luck,
August 30, 201114 yr Author Try buying the nearest metric key, slighty bigger and file it down to fit, even a good screwdriver that fits tightly in the hexagon will undo it, Good Luck, Thanks Lickey, but it's on a critical piece of the instrument that, if I stripped the inside of the allen nut, I'd be permanently nixed, and the brand new instrument would become an expensive ornament. Before I do that I'll get a set of Imperial allen keys posted to me - or find a guitar tech/luthier in Chiang Mai (or take it to Bangkok for repair), or..... Thanks again, ron
August 30, 201114 yr You can buy imperial size allen keys from Lanna Bolts, located on Asssithidon Rd. Coming from the moat, turn left at the Moo Kata on the corner and it is about 80 meteres on the right.
August 31, 201114 yr I was thinking HomePro, but I don't know if you have one up there.... I was thinking the same thing, but even the smallest mom and pop hardware shop should have them.
August 31, 201114 yr A T-head will fit, also known as Torx head....the one that looks like a star. If the head isn't countersunk, try gripping it with vice grips.
September 1, 201114 yr I have a complete set of Imperial allen keys and all other Imperial stuff as well. You are welcome to borrow the keys you need. You could even bring the Mandolin over and do it here. PM me
