Seven die when WWII bomb explodes in western Myanmar

ARAKAN, MYANMAR (BNO NEWS) -- Seven people were killed on Sunday when a World War II bomb accidentally detonated in western Myanmar (Burma), local media reported. Several children were among the casualties.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the village of Thae Chaung, located in Myanmar's western state of Arakan. A total of seven people were reported killing, including two children aged 10 and 12.

Few details about the incident were available. Some residents claimed a group of people had discovered the bomb and were trying to smash the bomb open when it exploded. Other residents said the group of people was only trying to remove the bomb from the area when it exploded/

Japan occupied Myanmar, which is also known as Burma, during World War II, and the country's Bay of Bengal coastal region was a strategic area for British forces to fight off Japanese troops. It not uncommon for villagers to find unexploded bombs in rivers and local waters, but they normally do not cause casualties.

More than 270,000 people, both civilians and soldiers, were killed in Myanmar during World War II.

And why exactly was there a 70 year old bomb in Malaysia? Also why would one try to smash a bomb open? Didnt they think it would explode maybe. Haha

Malaysia? Did you actually read the topic or just geographically challenged?

More than just geographically challenged; perhaps leaving it at 'challenged' may be kinder.

There was a discovery of a WWII bomb at KL's airport earlier this year

Bomb scare delays 90 flights

March 3, 2011

SEPANG: More than 90 international flights arriving and departing the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday were delayed after both runways were shut down temporarily because of the discovery of a World War 2 bomb.

The 226.7kg explosive, the size of a cooking gas cylinder, was found at the construction site of the new runway at KLIA 2, more than five kilometres away from the existing terminal.

Huge areas of the Thai border remain off limits due to various unexploded devices - landmines, cluster bombs etc; thread here
