we are both on the same true contract except being a slightly newer contract my friends conditions state a max of 1gig per month or they slow it down wheras my contract which is a few weeks older starting is unlimited gig per month

i am between soi chaiyapruek 1 and soi watboon

I think the thread is referring to AIS 3G and not True 3G. AIS works on 900Mhz, True works on 850Mhz. Not the same.

I suspect your 3G contract on True is not unlimited 3G, it is only 3GB/month 3G, and after that is EDGE for the remainder of the month. True eliminated the truly unlimited 3G contracts earlier this year. That is, they stopped offering them to new users, and converted existing unlimited 3G contracts.

Along with what BB1950 said, does your tablet offer an 850Mhz connection?

My galaxy tab box says HSDPA and HSUPA with some speeds followed by

tri-band 900/1900/2100 Mhz

the edge quad band is 850 to 1900

Does this mean i get 3 g when available please anybody

i have always assumed it is a 3 g phone

oh and when i drive about staring st the phone looking for the 3g logo i keep crashing into things is this normal please

Don't forget that AIS is using the 900 MHz band, so if you have an iPhone3 or a Blackberry, you should change your provider cool.gif

The official 2.1 GHz frequency is still not in use in Thailand.

Yup,

900 Mhz is not optimal, and as such hand sets in the market will be difficult to find ( tailor made mainly - not main stream ). Truee/DTAC handsets on 850 should be interchangeable.

Just got off the phone to AIS,

I have been on the Unlimited Data/Edge package for as long as I can remember and I pay 650 Baht per month, and now that 3G has come online it seems to be throttled at 360 Kbps.

However they say if I subscribe to the 3G package using code *133*24# at 855 Baht per month then the speed will increase.

I have also read that your 3G will be throttled to 360 Kbps if you exceed 3 GB

Anybody want to try it first?

Regardless of 850 or 900 MHz, it doesn't say anywhere that either of them are more "correct" than the other. The standard is meant to become 2100 MHz and I guess sooner or later it will be the case in Thailand as well. As it is now, it's mostly a political decision which band the different providers ended up using. It would be nice if all phones could use all frequencies. If you have a phone with support for only one of them you are of course forced to use a carrier who provide this frequency if you want 3G.

Seems at least Samsung SGS2 supports both, so if I was about to buy a new smartphone for use in Thailand, that would probably be on top of my shortlist alone for this reason (even though it's a gorgeous phone and I'd buy it anyway ;))

That's what I understand (and have posted)...360 Kbps is the minimum anyone with a 3G capable phone will get...it's basically the "standard" data plan speed. Like I have AIS 100 hr/mo EDGE for B 350 and I get this much faster and steadier 3G signal now for the same price. If one needs/wants a faster speed, there are specific 3G plans available.

360Kbs is not 3G speed.... would call it a higher than 2G. Currently edge on a good day floats around 150-200

Whatever you want to call it, it's 2x EDGE speed and makes it possible to stream both audio and video on my phone, which was not possible with EDGE. And I am not paying anything more for this speed boost. At least for me, it's perfectly adequate and I see no need to pay extra for even more speed.

They were right, even though I was physically using the 3G/HSPDA network but on my 650 baht package, it was throttled to 384 Kbps.

I have just upgraded to unlimited 3G package (799 Baht) and just got a speedtest of 2 Mbits down and 1.5 Mbits up.

A remarkable improvement.

it says 850 on the box and i know its a genuine tab as i had to take it to samsung for a software re-store after tgf forgot password and i changed sim card

true shop today said theirs is on 850 but perhaps my tab is faulty.

tuk com say your tab 6 months old need new one look and on the box of a new one is a sticker saying supports true 3 g

so i suppose true not sure what frequency when my tab made ---------so old and new on 850 ----but this is thailand

neif, earlier you said:

Which means it will not work with True for 3G, only GPRS/EDGE. But it will work with AIS as others are commenting that AIS 3G is apparently showing up in locations around Pattaya. You need an AIS SIM card enabled with the 3G data plan to use the 3G.

You have to watch box packaging. For instance, I bought an LG-P500 Android phone that came packaged with a True Move Net SIM (3G+WiFi) card. I learned later, that the phone was not capable of True 3G as it was only capable of 900/1900/2100 Mhz HSDPA/HSUPA, similar to your tablet. The box did not list the supported 3G frequencies, it just said HSDPA 7.2 + WiFi. Very misleading! Only in Thailand ;)

most interesting ..

i'm supposedly on the AIS unlimited 3g package now . have been for ages ..

3G Package 799 Baht

3G Package 799 Baht for UNLIMIT 3G/EDGE/GPRS and Wifi*

BUT

if i look at my call plan on there website

GPRS Package799B Free EDGE/GPRS and Wifi UNLIMIT - the remaining balance of your 3G Package is 2GB 962MB 760KB , valid until 23/09/2011 04:11 PM

so my unlimted package appears limited to 3gb .. also even though i'm on that package still only getting 360k/s and well within the 3gb limit mentioned by another poster

phone is a galaxy s2 gt9100

yes spot on thanks now i understand

it looks like it is possible to change modem settings on some tabs if you know what to do

so back to tuk com and poss ask samsung on skvit and if not try ais although i believe i read the 850 is quicker in some countries but who knows here. usual mess.

Nokia C7 and N8 cover both WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100. Not as fancy as the iPhone or HTC/Samsung/LG`s, however they do know how to keep you connected. Free GPS Maps all over the world, inkl. Thailand, is another bonus.

<br />3G on AIS as well over here, Soi SIam Country Club road.<br /><br />Full signal (both WCDMA @ 99% and HSDPA @ 91% strength when connected).<br /><br />Ping times much better then when on Edge, but speeds seem to be limited to about 375 kbps (0.35 mbps). I had the same issue with speed limited to around 360 Kbps, I had to apply an unlimited 3G package then speeds increased, today I got 4.5 Mbps down 1.8 Mbps up at Jomtien.

The cost is 799 + VAT, the code is *133*24#

WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 is not 3G (HSDPA/HSUPA), and will not work with either AIS or True in the Pattaya area for GPRS/EDGE or 3G service. I believe Hutch (which was taken over by True) provided CDMA service for the Pattaya/Jomtien area. CAT also provides CDMA service, but I'm not sure they provided service for Pattaya or left it to Hutch to serve the Pattaya area.

This is quite wrong. W-CDMA is compatible with UMTS/HSPDA.

W-CDMA and CDMA are not the same thing.

Actually CHdiver got the semantics wrong, think what he wanted to say is, that the Nokia N8 and C7 both support HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100.

So they will work on any 3G network here in Thailand.

I also don't agree with his "Not as fancy as the iPhone" comment.

Wouldn't exchange my N8 for an iPhone, even if I got the next iphone 5 as a free exchange :whistling:

My bad… You're correct. In a sense it's the same thing…

HSDPA is just an extra layer, for higher data transfer speeds.

That's another great Nokia phone. Most likely it's the same hardware as the N8, with a qwerty keyboard, but downscaled on the camera and no internal card slot.

These are great phones, but no that well liked due to the OS… However you get so much for the price, that it's silly, to compare to an iPhone. B)

hello does anyone have ideas on the best mid range smart phone to use on AIS 3g service in Pattaya, i have been looking at the Samsung GIO with 800 mhz processor Android OS, promotion priced @ 6900 baht, everyone at the phone shops really push Samsung over Nokia because of the Android OS. This will be my first smartphone, all my frieinds/family back home use iPhones. I don't care what brand it is, I want fast down load and biggest easiest screen interface without having to pay more than about 7 or 8000 baht. I just need it to check stock market updates while out at night mainly, Thanks, Paul...

I Luv my LG Optimus one P500h. Best bang for the buck Android phone out there imho. You really don't need anything faster unless you plan to watch video or ? I mostly do email, check stock market and some forex trading.

HSDPA 7.2, WCDMA:900/2100, GSM:850/900/1800/1900RF Band

Android is good if you are not afraid to root your phone and put on a custom ROM which opens up all kinds of new possibilities. You just can't do that with any other Mobile OS.
