Strong earthquake strikes off Canada's Vancouver Island

PORT HARDY (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck off Vancouver Island in British Columbia on early Friday afternoon, seismologists said, but no tsunami warnings were issued.

The 6.7-magnitude earthquake at 12.41 p.m. local time (1941 GMT) was centered about 135 kilometers (84 miles) south-southeast of Port Hardy, a district municipality on the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island. It struck about 2 kilometers (1.2 mile deep), making it a shallow earthquake, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

The center said no tsunami warning would be issued.
