Collapse at gold mine in northwestern Colombia kills 7

BOGOTA (BNO NEWS) -- Seven miners were killed on early Wednesday morning during a collapse at a gold mine in northwestern Colombia, officials said. Two others were injured.

The accident happened in the municipality of Atrato-Yuto in the department of Chocó when a mine shaft collapsed. "We could only rescue two people alive. The others died instantly," Atrato official Cruz Palacio said.

The injured were taken immediately to a local hospital but were not believed to be in a life-threatening condition. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident, and the Mayor's Office is investigating whether the small gold mine had the proper permits.

In June 2010, 73 people were killed after a large gas explosion ripped through the San Fernando mine in Amaga, a town in the country's Antioquia Department. The San Fernando mine is one of the largest coal mines in Colombia.
