10 die when bus overturns in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least ten people were killed on early Wednesday evening when a passenger bus overturned in the Chinese city of Shanghai, officials said on Thursday. More than a dozen others were injured.

The municipal government told the state-run Xinhua news agency that the passenger bus, which was carrying 24 people, overturned at around 8:45 p.m. local time in the Pudong District of Shanghai, the largest city in China.

According to reports, seven people died at the scene of the accident. Emergency teams consisting of police, firefighters, and medical teams rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operations and transported the injured to local hospitals.

Three of the injured later succumbed to their wounds at area hospitals, bringing the total death toll to ten people. In addition, 14 others have been been injured, some of whom are reported to be in a critical condition.

Shanghai's municipal government said the bus was operated by Inventec (Shanghai) Corporation, and the victims are believed to be company employees. It was not immediately known what caused the accident, but officials said investigations have been launched.
