Uganda jails two for roles in deadly World Cup bombing

KAMPALA (BNO NEWS) -- Uganda's High Court on Friday sentenced two men to 25 years and 5 years in jail for their involvement in the twin bombings which killed 76 people in the capital of Kampala in July 2010, local media reported on Saturday.

Edris Nsubuga was sentenced to 25 years in jail on three counts of terrorism, while Muhamoud Mugisha was sentenced to five years in prison for being a conspirator. Nsubuga and Mugisha pleaded guilty and will testify against the 12 other people who are facing trial over the attacks, the New Vision newspaper reported.

A total of 76 people were killed and 70 others were injured in the double attack. The first attack happened at around 10.25 p.m. local time at an Ethiopian restaurant in Kabalagala, a neighborhood of Kampala,while the 2010 World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain was underway.

The second attack happened at about 11.15 p.m. local time when two bombs exploded at Kyadondo Rugby Club in the Kampala neighborhood of Nakawa. Both exploded seconds apart as hundreds had gathered to watch the final match of the World Cup, which was won by Spain. A third bomb was defused before it exploded.

The Somali extremist group Al-Shabaab, which is fighting to overthrow the government of Somalia, claimed responsibility for the attacks and said it was a protest against Uganda's deployment of peacekeepers in Somalia.
