I booked a flight from Australia to Bangkok via Hongkong for the end of March 2006 for AUD1230 including taxes.Travel agent stated that all confirmed bookings

must be paid in full within 14 days. Previous requirement was 30 days before travel.I was told that this is the policy with all international airlines now.

You really have to plan ahead.

David: I think you can do a lot better than $AUD1230. It depends on a number of factors, including which city you wish to depart from and return to in Australia, if you are happy with economy class, if you have a preferred airline and finally if you must stop-over in Hong Kong.

I do not have any loyalty to a particular airline. I have travelled Thai and was not impressed with their customer service and I have travelled a fair bit with Royal Brunei because they are cheap.

Checking with Flight Centre, they show pre-tax and pre-government charges fares.

For March 2006, return Perth to Bangkok fares range from $AUD725 (Malaysia Airlines) to $1517 (Qantas Airways). Add $AUD200 to the above fares and you will get very close to the total airfare.

Personally - shop around and buyer beware: You get what you pay for.

I am going BKK to Sydney tomorrow on Emerites, they have recently started service there and round trip is around 25k Baht.

The rates increase as one approaches high season but March shouldn't be a high season month. You will note, when checking availability of flights, that the month and date you specify will make a difference on availability and price.

Forget the Christmas Season.

I reguarly fly Royal Brunei BKK - BNE 21,000 Baht return incl tax (3 month ticket). Never had any problems. They have a really generous frequent flyer program too. Every 4th or 5th trip works out free, not to manage an upgrade to silver class membership after 3 trips which allows you receive 1.5x the normal mileage towards rewards and use of the business class lounge at Brunei airport. I know for a fact they have cheap flights to Sydney too.

When booking flights from Australia I use www.bestflights.com.au and out of Thailand I use www.saveflights.com In both cases i grab the price off the net, take it to my travel agent and they beat it.

Excellent advice. That's exactly how I get my best air fare.

It's the taxes that are currently the killer. They fluctuate daily but now that the world oil price is dropping, taxes should start to decline too.

In Sydney I use Student Flights. (www.studentflights.com.au)

I have found that they beat all other agent's prices, including what is available on bestflights.com. No need to be a student either.

www.statravel.com.au is also handy, another mate reccomends www.zuji.com.au as it displays the tax charges along with the airfare
