Thats an interesting question, I've also thought about it before.

I remember thinking when watching hangover 2 about the monk scene, that he wasn't wearing the same color robe as most Thai monks I've seen. I figured it was because the scene made the monk look a bit foolish, so I thought they changed the color of the robe so they could say "its not a Thai monk." Come to think of it, it was red and you mention that Burmese monks wear red robes; I wonder if a Thai consultant had that in mind when the color was chosen, you know what the Thai think of the Burmese

From my understanding in Thailand the more common saffron robed Monks

eat in the morning and then before sundown,

The darker robed monks eat only once a day.

I could be wrong so can stand corrected if so.

I heard that too, the dark robed monks = strikter, many of them walk arround ( alone ) to not get too attached to places/people/monks,

often "sleep" in the forest and when staying in a temple only for short time (1-2 days or just over night).

But this does not exactly answer the question about burmese monks.

The Monks who wear Brown robes in Thailand are called Pra Thudong (พระธุดงค์)

"Forest monks of Southeast Asia, also called ascetic monks or meditation monks because they embraced thudong or ascetic austerities, revived the Theravada Buddhist tradition directly linked to the historical Gautama Buddha. This thudong tradition emphasizes meditation and ascetic practice over scholarly and literary pursuits."

Many of these Monks have taken very strict vows - including a vow to walk everywhere, not to take any form of transport.

All Monks in Thailand eat only before mid-day, although drinking water etc. is allowed at any time.
