Foreign Minister: Thaksin Helped Ease Thai-Cambodian Conflict

The foreign minister insists former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra helped relieve the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, adding that he is not intervening in the government's administration.

At the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said the fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been playing a key role in improving relations between Thailand and Cambodia, following the recent armed conflicts between the two countries along the border.

In addition, he reiterated that Thaksin does not have a great influence on the Cabinet.

Surapong strongly denies that Thaksin has issued the government’s policies, saying that Thaksin only gives advice to Pheu Thai Party members.

Four troops killed in attack at Thai south school

NARATHIWAT, September 28, 2011 (AFP) - At least four Thai soldiers were killed and two other people wounded in a bomb and shooting attack at a school in Thailand's insurgency-plagued deep south on Wednesday, police said.

An unknown number of assailants launched an assault at midday on troops waiting to escort teachers home from Ban Lamoh Nok school in Narathiwat, one of three southern provinces that have suffered nearly eight years of conflict.

"Four soldiers died, one is in a critical condition, and one student was wounded by strayed bullets," Colonel Sathanfah Wamasingh, the district police commander, said.

In a separate attack, 16 militants in two pick up trucks and motorcycles opened fire on a military outpost in another area of Narathiwat on Tuesday, killing a 21-year-old private and injuring two other troops.

Also in Narathiwat, a 47-year-old Muslim man was gunned down in a drive-by attack as he drove home after visiting a graveyard.

More than 4,800 people have been killed in near-daily attacks since early 2004, according to Deep South Watch, an independent monitoring group, which has said attacks have increased in frequency and violence in recent months.

Amnesty International on Tuesday called on insurgents to halt attacks on civilians, a practice that it said was on the rise and in many cases amounted to a war crime.

People in the region complain there is discrimination against ethnic Malay Muslims by authorities in the Buddhist-majority nation, including alleged abuses by the armed forces.

Meanwhile the department added that Nesat Storm is also set to disperse which will lead to lesser rainfall in the northeastern region. The drainage of water will be the utmost priority since water levels are on the decline.

The department ensured that around 20 October, water levels in Nakorn Sawan province should return to normal which will also be reflective upon water levels of similar areas. It is predicted by the department that by 20 November, all areas will return to normal conditions.

Man Shot Dead on Way to Feed Paralyzed Father

A group of insurgents burnt down surveillance cameras on an interprovincial road in Pattani Province.

Meanwhile, gunmen killed a villager in a drive-by shooting in the same province.

The body of a villager, identified as Khampong Ngok-ngam, aged 42, was found alongside his bicycle and a food box on Pakajinor-Pakaharang Road in Pattani's Nongjik District .

Investigators said two suspects riding on a motorcycle fired at Khampong in the head and face while he was cycling home to feed his paralyzed father.

They assume the crime aimed to stir panic in the district.

A neighbor of Khampong stated the victim was blind in his left eye and suffered from epilepsy.

He earned a living for himself and his paralyzed father by working at a market.

Meanwhile, on Pattani-Narathiwat Road in Taluboh Subdistrict, 29 security cameras were torched.

Forensic police inspected the crime scene and collected fingerprints for examination.

Investigators stated more than 20 suspects on motorcycles set fire to the cameras at around 4 A.M.

A total of 150 surveillance cameras were burnt down in Nongjik District.

Some were installed by the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center.

In Narathiwat, a forensic police unit along with military and police officers inspected the operating base of the province's 35th Special Task Force in Sukirin District after it was attacked by a group of militants.

The gunfight left one officer dead and two injured.

The crossfire is believed to have injured some militants.

Investigators assumed the attack was the work of the insurgent group operated by Zanuzee Zuzeewae, who is active in Sukirin and its neighboring districts.

Narathiwat police chief Police Major General Chaitat Inthanujit has ordered his subordinates to seek cooperation from hospitals and medical facilities in the province to be on the lookout for injured militants.

Chaithat believes they are still hiding out in Sukirin or Janae districts.

image_20110928164114AF68CFA6-F28C-B1EC-EB7A931FBF8F94E1.jpg

NARATHIWAT, Sept 28 – The death toll from the Sept 16 multiple bombings here rose to seven on Wednesday as a Malaysian tourist, injured in the Su-ngai Kolok blasts, died from his wounds, raising the death toll to seven, in one of the worst insurgent attacks in the restive southern province.

Identified as Chan Yee Son, 63, the victim was treated at Songklanakarind Hospital in Hat Yai, under close watch, after being severely wounded and hospitalised for nearly two weeks.

The patient however was pronounced dead this morning due to a blood infection.

Mr Chan was the fifth Malaysian tourist killed in the attack, with the other four including a three-year-old Malaysian boy.

The other two deaths were Thai nationals. Fifteen persons remain hospitalised in several hospitals.

Explosions were detonated in three locations on the same road in Su-ngai Kolok’s busy commercial area on Friday evening Sept 16, at the start of the weekend when tourists normally come in greater numbers. The bombs killed five persons immediately and wounded over a hundred others.

The sixth death was reported a week later after a reporter for a local newspaper died from his injuries.

Almost daily attacks since early 2004 have claimed about 4,800 lives in the insurgency-torn region, according to Deep South Watch, an independent research group that monitors the violence in Thailand's three southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat bordering Malaysia. (MCOT online news)
