How would the members here translate 'The Thai race' - would ชาติเชื้อไทย be correct?

เชื้อชาติไทย but of course the notion of a "Thai race" is nonsensical (as are virtually all, if not all, racial tags), since the group of people who consider themselves to be of the "Thai race" could not be differentiated, by DNA, from any other randomly selected group of, at the minimum, Asians, if not any randomly selected group of human beings (someone with a better grasp can maybe clarify this point)

I understand that but I just wanted a translation of 'The Thai Race'.

I have a line from a dharma story that might help. It is referring to a young man.

He's a Thai national but of the Vietnamese race; origin; nationality; extraction -(whatever)

จึงได้สัญชาติไทย แต่เชื้อชาติญวน

สัญชาติ

[N] nationality

เชื้อชาติ

• [N] race; origin; nationality; extraction

This might not help either, but I got a lot of hits searching ไทยพันธุ์แท้ which I would translate as Thai pure breed.

I'm not sure if it can be applied to people or just plants and animals.

On a related note, you will often hear pronouncements referring to ความเป็นไทย, which I guess translates as Thai-ness, the essence of being Thai.

This is not a concept that is taken lightly -- it is used when introducing the National Anthem on television.

Certainly this article from Mahamakut Buddhist University discusses the term ความเป็นไท in terms of Thai-ness, asking whether it resides "อยู่ที่คนไทย" หรือ "อยู่ที่ประเทศไทย"

So being Thai basically means being free? I like that.
