Yingluck admits floods reach crisis level

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra admitted Thursday the flooding situation in the country has reached the crisis level.

She said she was very worried because the crisis would worsen when a new storm hits the country.

She was speaking to reporters after she was briefed of the current situation at the flood situation monitoring centre of the Royal Irrigation Department.

One dead, 5 wounded in Narathiwat attacks

NARATHIWAT, Oct 6 – One villager-- a woman-- was shot dead, while one man and four soldiers were wounded in overnight shooting and bombing incidents in restive Narathiwat’s Cho Ai Rong district late Wednesday, according to local police.

Pol Lt-Col Somjai Singkliang of Cho Ai Rong police station together with an investigative team and a bomb disposal unit investigated the scene of the bombing.

The initial investigation found that a group of 10 assailants in military lookalike uniforms, armed with M16 and AK47 assault rifles, were divided into three teams before carrying out their attacks.

The first group shot Jintana Sae Tew, a 46-year-old woman at her home, located near Bukit railway station. The victim died immediately.

Abdulkarim Masae, a neighbour and former provincial official, heard the gunfire and opened a window to observe the situation. An attacker guarding Ms Jintana’s home, fired one shot at Mr Abdulkarim, leaving him wounded. After the assault, the team fled.

Responding to the incident, Lt Rangsan Arkornnak and three soldiers from Narathiwat Special Task Force 31 rushed to the scene of the shooting by pickup truck.

En route to Ban Patapasay village, a second insurgent team manually detonated a bomb buried in the road. The explosion injured the four soldiers’ legs and torso.

The wounded soldiers, in addition to Lt Rangsan, were identified as Pvt Supachai Thammarik and Pvt Supareuk Chuaithai.

Following the bombing Cho Ai Rong deputy governor Masagree Saree, and defence volunteers came by pickup truck to the scene of the bomb ambush.

When the vehicle entered Ban Cho Kro village, the government response team passed a third group of insurgents who triggered a bomb buried beneath a tree.

No injuries or deaths occurred as the vehicle had already passed where the bomb was hidden.

More than 4,300 lives, including residents, authorities and insurgent suspects, have died in almost daily unrest since the violence escalated in 2004. (MCOT online news)

High tide to cause water surge in Bangkok today

BANGKOK, 6 October 2011 (NNT)-The Operational Centre for the Prevention and Solving of Flood Problems has revealed that the high tide would occur at 15.49 hrs today; but expected no overflow in parts of Bangkok that are behind the flood barriers.

According to the Centre, the situation will continue to be monitored despite the assurance that the barriers could block the inundation up to 2.5 meters. Districts of Bangkok at risk are Minburi, Nongjok, Ladkrabang and Khlongsamwa; some of which are already waterlogged, given they are outside the protective barriers.

DSI Sees More Rampant Computer Crimes

The Department of Special Investigation admits that computer crimes are likely to increase with the widespread availability of the internet.

It advises internet users to have different passwords for each social media and e-mail account to prevent hacking.

Deputy Director General of the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, Police General Yanapol Yangyuen disclosed that the current rate of computer crimes is likely to increase as the number of computer users continues to rise.

He noted it is difficult for the authorities to prevent the posting of lese majeste messages or libel messages against political post holders, but assured officials will do their best.

He added that internet users must protect themselves from hacking by using different password for each social media site or e-mail account.

Violators of computer crimes face up to five years of imprisonment and a maximum fine of 100,000 baht.

Yanapol said the DSI is also now working on cases of tax fraud and illegal cosmetic sale.

Pheu thai reinforced online security

BANGKOK, 6 October 2011 (NNT)-Pheu Thai MP. Jirayu Huangsab has instructed a team of tech-savvy individuals to reinforce online security for his Party while encouraging every Minister and the Secretariat of the Cabinet to frequently change the password to their email.

Following the arrest of the suspect who hacked into the Prime Minister’s account, Mr. Jirayu urged Pheu Thai members to regularly check their sent messages to make sure they were not sent by other people without their consent.

Meanwhile, the MP said that the proposal to amend the defense bill was practical; since the government represented Thai people, it should be able to consult with Army commanders without being accused of intervening in the latter's duties. He claimed the move would enable the army to work in the same direction with the administration.

Basalt from Moon to be displayed in Thailand next month

The 3,300-million-years-old basalt from the moon will be on display in Thailand during the Technomart - Innomart fair next month.

Other highlight exhibits include items related to what astronauts have been using.

The Technomart - Innomart 2011 will run from November 10 to November 25 at the Hall 9, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.

Deputy PM Reserved on Defense Law Amendment

An outspoken deputy premier says he is not in the position to clarify the push for an amendment of the law governing the military reshuffle given the explanation over the issue should be made by the defense minister.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said he is not in charge of military affairs so his comment on the government's planned amendment of the Defense Ministry Act could upset the defense minister.

Chalerm's statement was in response to a question during the Parliament meeting today about the revision of the law.

Chalerm stated he cannot answer if the amendment will create a conflict between his ruling Pheu Thai Party and the army while saying his high-profile role in addressing almost every issue related to the government is justified as many of them are about work under his supervision, such as drug eradication.

He delivered thanks to army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha for his cooperation on the illicit drug crackdown given the effort cannot be achieved by the police and the Narcotics Control Board alone.

On the proposed revival of the village boy scouts, Charlem stated the matter is the responsibility of Interior Minister Police General Kowit Wattana and he has no idea about the latter's thought over the suggestion that such a proposal is the empowerment of red-shirt core elements in the provinces.

The deputy premier said he sees nothing unusual in the revival of the village boy scouts as they can help support the police's work.

Hotline set up to assist privately owned wild animals

The Zoo and Wildlife Veterinary Society of Thailand has set up a hotline centre to help evacuate privately owned wild animals affected by the flooding at no charge.

SWVST's Vet Nantarika Chansue said that the continued flooding in many provinces of the country have not just affected people but also their privately-owned wild animals.

Evacuating these kinds of animals must be done correctly and under hygienic conditions, the doctor said, adding otherwise they could choke, suffer infections or die.

"Therefore, the SWVST has launched a hotline, 1362, which will operate around the clock, to provide an evacuation service for owners of these wild animals free of charge," she said.

It is suggested that owners seek help from the centre when the water level is about ten centimetres from the cage because the staff need time to prepare equipment and themselves.

Meanwhile vet Manote Yindee, deputy dean of veterinary faculty, Mahidol University, said that evacuating wild animals is more difficult than moving domestic pets because of their instincts.

"Before moving them, wild animals need to be sedated and the evacuation would have to be done quickly. If the work is implemented by non professionals, the animals could become infected or die," he said.
