2000 Toyota Celica, good condition valued in MY at Ringett 21,000 = $ 7000 ( valued in USA at $3500 MAX !! ) imported there from US under MMSH ) . Just a squidge under 2000 liter engine . Any idea as to much this would cost in duty? Where to apply for an import permit?

Can I just drive it, importing it at MY border? ( It is now tagged in MY but also insured to drive in Thailand and I expect to drive it in soon .) Yes , I have B visa and work permit .

Thanks on advance,

TW

well, there's no "Thailand my 2nd home" program, so that means you have two options:

1. temporary import as a tourist. I believe you can get up to one month at a time doing this (we do it almost every year for the Porsche MY club DOTY)

2. permanent import, which means paying 80% import duty, 30% excise tax, 10% interior tax and 7% VAT but the real kicker is that it's all to be paid on assesed value, not actual.. So IMHO a minefield.

ON THE TEMPORARY import you can get more than 1 month..there are some threads on gt rider about bikes coming in this way.. i believe 6mths was quoted but it can still be hassle.

This sounds interesting, can you tell me more? I have visas in both countries.

Thanks for the replies.

I wonder how a car is assessed? That 7000 is twice what I thought it would be.

It will get assessed based on what TH customs believe it's worth, so my guess is several hundred thousand in taxes, given what it sells for here: http://one2car.com/search/search_result.aspx?Brand=B0054&Model=S0537&Year1=2000&Year2=2002&

i.e. You're not going to import a used car for substantially less that what they sell for here.

Also, if the car is from the USA, isn't it LHD?

Left hand drive? Yes. Is this forbade ? I've seen left handed imports driving here and it's OK in Malaysia.

Nope, but it won't have any resale value to speak of as a LHD, so it wouldn't seem to make sense to pay all of the import duties and taxes on it...
