Bomb blasts rock Nigerian police barracks, killing 3

GOMBE, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least three people were killed on early Sunday morning when a group of assailants bombed a mobile police barracks in eastern Nigeria, official said on Monday.

The attack happened at a mobile police base in Kwame, located in the Kwame Local Government Area about five kilometers (3.1 miles) from Gombe, when a series of three bombs exploded in the area, Gombe State Police Commissioner Orubebe Ebikeme told the Nigerian Tribune.

According to reports, at around 2:20 a.m. local time on Sunday, the attackers entered the base and detonated a series of explosives before fleeing with a number of firearms and ammunition, which they stole from the base.

Authorities immediately cordoned off the area, saying that there were still some explosives in the area which had not yet detonated. At least three people were confirmed dead, although some reports indicated that four people had died, including one police officer and three civilians.

The attack comes just a few days after the U.S. government released an update on its travel warning for Nigeria, which was followed by Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

On Thursday, the U.S. said "violent crime committed by individuals and gangs, as well as by persons wearing police and military uniforms, remains a problem throughout the country."
