Report Doctors in Thaksin Hospital Saga Face Promotion Uproar
From Left. Pol Lt Gen Sophonrat Singhacharu and Pol Lt Gen Thaweesilp Wechvitarn. Composite courtesy of Thai PBS World Amidst a whirlwind of controversy, political activist Dr Tul Sittisomwong has lodged an official objection against the promotion of two senior police doctors linked to Thaksin Shinawatra's contentious stay at the Police General Hospital. The focus is on Pol Lt Gen Sophonrat Singhacharu and Pol Lt Gen Thaweesilp Wechvitarn, whose names appear on the latest promotion list despite ongoing scrutiny. The proposed promotions would see Sophonrat ascend to deputy national police chief and Thaweesilp take on the role of assistant national police chief in charge of medical affairs. This list has been publicly shared, allowing for the submission of objections regarding any discrepancies. Dr Tul strongly opposes the advancements, citing past violations of medical ethics determined by the Medical Council of Thailand during Thaksin’s extended hospitalisation. Adding fuel to the fire, both doctors are currently under criminal investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). Despite these allegations, no disciplinary measures have been enacted by the police force thus far, which has only intensified the public criticism surrounding their inclusion in the promotion roster. Dr Tul insists that their involvement in the scandal should preclude them from advancing within the police hierarchy. The unfolding situation has ignited debates over ethical standards and transparency within police promotions. Many in the public arena question whether such advancements are appropriate given the ongoing legal proceedings and previous ethical breaches. The petition by Dr Tul aims to halt these promotions and urge further accountability within the police establishment. This controversy has shone a light on the broader issues of integrity and justice in high-profile cases, particularly where influential figures are involved. The spotlight on these promotions is a critical juncture for the police force, as it navigates public perception and the demand for transparent processes. Summary: Dr Tul Sittisomwong challenges the promotion of police doctors involved in Thaksin Shinawatra’s hospital saga, citing ongoing ethics violations and corruption investigations. The situation underlines concerns about transparency in police promotions, drawing public scrutiny and calls for accountability. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai PBS World 2025-07-08 -

Military Thailand and United States Launch CARAT 2025 Joint Naval Exercise in Sattahip
Picture courtesy of Sattahip News. Senior naval commanders from Thailand and the United States presided over the opening ceremony of the CARAT 2025 joint military exercise on 7 July, marking the start of one of the largest bilateral naval training operations between the two nations. The ceremony was held at Laem Thian Port in Sattahip district, Chonburi Province and was co-chaired by Admiral Natthaphon Diewwanich, Commander of the Royal Thai Fleet and Rear Admiral Katie F. Sheldon, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet. The exercise involves approximately 1,000 personnel from both navies. The Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise has been held annually since 1995 and serves as a key platform for improving maritime security coordination, tactical interoperability and mutual understanding between the two naval forces. For this year’s exercise, the Royal Thai Navy’s Frigate Squadron 2 has been assigned overall command, under the leadership of Rear Admiral Anurak Promngam. CARAT 2025 is designed to enhance the operational capabilities of both navies across multiple domains, including maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and humanitarian assistance. It also serves to reinforce the longstanding defence partnership between Thailand and the United States, ensuring readiness in the face of evolving regional challenges. The 12-day exercise is divided into three phases: harbour training, at-sea operations and post-exercise debriefing. The Royal Thai Navy has deployed three warships, HTMS Naresuan, HTMS Saiburi and HTMS Rattanakosin, as well as five types of aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. The U.S. Navy is participating with the USS Santa Barbara, multiple aircraft and Sea Hawk anti-submarine helicopters. Joint operations will take place from 7 to 18 July across Chonburi and Rayong provinces and in the upper Gulf of Thailand. Officials emphasised that the exercise would improve combined response capabilities, promote knowledge exchange and strengthen the maritime domain awareness of both navies, in line with the complex security environment of today’s world.
