Are There Any Afrikaner Community In Chiang Mai?

Featured Replies

I know mainly migrated to the UK, Oz, or NZ but how many are here in the LOS. Are there any community in Chiang Mai, I mean there are even Israelis here so the town should not be too bad for the white African?

there are even Israelis here

Meaning?

meaning an Afrikaaner in Chiang Mai can wish his jewish friends "a gitn schabbes" on a friday late afternoon. and if he doesn't master yiddish he resorts to a simple "shabbath shalom". as simple as that.

Don't be presumptuous.

Reminds me of this gentile character I met who volunteered to me that he loved Fiddler on the Roof. I hope the vomit washed out of his clothes OK ...

I'm friends with a Zimbabwean guy who is half black. Interested?

There's a handful of South Africans/Zimbabweans working in the tobacco business around Lampang.

They used to always hang out at the UN Irish pub

Sounds almost like you want to sell him.

The F&B manager from Shangri-la hotel is Afrikaans.. you could ask him.

Yeah right, it doesn't mean anything, I only say that because it is an odd place to find a Jewish community that's all.

There used to be quite a large community 20 years ago but has dwindled as the tobacco industry moved elsewhere. As other posters mentioned:

  • They are still always at the UN Irish Pub when the Springboks are playing
  • Several of them are members of the Gymkhana Club and you might catch them there on a Friday evening
  • The Pub also used to be a regular hangout but not sure about that now.
  • They have always played a big part in the Chiangmai Cricket Sixes
  • The tobacco factories were located in Lamphun, not Lampang.

the white African ?

I know a Liberian albino chap. He's been trying to organize a white African meetup for ages.

I forgot to add that the last two times I was in the Irish Pub, there was bloke selling biltong and boerwors (my spelling is probably wrong, but sausage anyway).

If that doesn't make you homesick, nothing will.
