For someone who think of moving to a farm in Isaan, what do you think are the main differences between a Thai redneck and his brother in Europe or America ?

Posted

How Do You spot a Redneck ?

:D if his porch falls down and kills more than 14 dogs he is a Redneck

When the spotlights, bullbars, gunracks etc etc etc have cost more than the pick-up is worth

Thanks, AndyCrosby, for that laugh-a-second read.

Back to the OP's question:

I have red-neck family down in the Ozarks of Arkansas (who I visited a number of times in my youth), all cotton farmers. Now now I live in farm country of Isaan. I consequently declare myself somewhat of an authority on red-necks and "baannawk," despite the fact that I am personally very hi-so. rolleyes.gif

My answer is found in the following vignette I pull out of a recent experience.

Last month, I was eating batter-dipped okra in an Isaan restaurant, washed down by sweet iced tea. Across the street about 5 teen boys with t-shirts in rolled up sleeves were smoking and drinking beers on the tailgate of their pickup truck. They were listening to Hank Williams' belting out "Your Cheatin' Heart" on their pick-up stereo. Isaan? Ozarks? For just a moment, I wasn't exactly sure where I was.

I find the lifestyles and values to be very, very similar. The only things that are different are the outward trappings. However, sometimes even the trappings are the same. It's not unusual to see Isaan farmers show up downtown in our Mueang district with cowboy hats, cowboy boots and those massive belt buckles.

More importantly, the core is the same.
