KANDAHAR (BNO NEWS) -- Security forces killed at least eleven armed insurgents in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, the provincial government said. Several others were arrested while a local official survived a bomb attack.

Kandahar Security Chief Rahmatullah Atrafi told a news conference on Saturday afternoon that several operations were launched in Arghandab District, Zhari District and Kandahar City, the capital of the province which carries the same name.

Atrafi said eleven armed insurgents were killed while six others were arrested by Afghan National Police during the operations. Among the insurgents were at least two men who were dressed as women, Atrafi said. He added that hundreds of kilograms of drugs and two Afghan National Police uniforms were also seized by police.

Earlier on Saturday, at around 9.30 a.m. local time, a roadside bomb exploded near a vehicle carrying Kandahar Director of Pilgrimage and Pious Affairs, Mawlawi Noor-u-l Aziz, in Panjwai District. "His vehicle was completely demolished but the director has luckily survived," a provincial spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added: "Enemies of Afghanistan have frequently attacked to assassinate the officials who work honestly for the people of Afghanistan but they have been failed in their negative effort. [The] Kandahar Governor Office harshly condemns the insurgent attacks on its officials."
