Tap water unfit to drink in Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Thonburi

BANGKOK, 27 October 2011 (NNT) – Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) has urged residents in provinces on the western side of the Chao Phraya River to boil the tap water before drinking as the raw water quality has been affected by the floods.

The precautionary advice applies to Mueang, Bang Bua Thong, Bang Yai, Sai Noi, and Bang Kruai districts in Nonthaburi province, Phra Pradaeng and western Phra Samut Chedi districts in Samut Prakan province, and all the 15 districts in Thon Buri.

Although the tap water is not of drinkable quality in these areas, it is still safe for general purposes. MWA is trying to improve the tap water quality in the three provinces and will immediately inform the public when the situation returns to normal.

Drinking Water Shortage Expected to Ease Soon

The commerce minister has said that the shortage of drinking water supply in Bangkok will ease soon given that the government has already been provided with hundreds of essential machines from China.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittrat Na Ranong said the government has received 120 machines to make drinking water, with an hourly capacity of 500 liters each, from the Chinese government.

Kittirat said the machines are able to produce enough drinking water for more than 1 million people per day which could help ease the present shortage of bottled water.

Kittirat said some of the machines will operate at the Don Muang Airport, which is being used as the office of the Flood Relief Operations Center while the remaining machines will be handed out to evacuation shelters and hospitals in flooded areas.

The minister went on to say he has sought cooperation from soft drink manufacturers, asking them to adapt their production lines to produce more bottled water, while ensuring that drinking water vending machines are still safe for use.

He said the quality of water from those machines is regularly checked by related government agencies.

Bangkok flood worsened

The Nation

As of Thursday's morning, the floodwater has kept on rising in northern and western Bangkok. On Vibhavadi-Rangsit Highway, the inundation has spreaded to Wat Lak Si, located about 200 meters from the Don Muang Tollway ramp.

The water level is about 50 centimeters.

On Phaholyothin Road, the floodwater from Future Park Rangsit shopping mall to Don Mueang Airport continues to rise, shutting down traffic.

The overflowing water has started to inundate Bhumibol Hospital.

A section of earth dyke at Don Mueang Airport collapsed, prompting emergency pumping in order to safeguard the headquarters of Flood Relief Operations Centre.

In Thon Buri, workers still could not complete the repairs of dykes at two major canals, Masawat and Thawee Wattana, due to strong water flow.

The inundation at Wat Puranawas rose to 2.4 meters, prompting emergency evacuation of monks and flood victims residing at the shelter inside the temple.

Floodwaters have rendered the stetch of road from Bangplad Intersection to Rama 7 Bridge impassible as flooding continue to threaten western Bangkok.

Both inbound and outbound traffic from Bangplad Intersection to Rama 7 Bridge has been disabled by deep flood waters.

Meanwhile, Chao Phraya River burst the bank and sandbag levees to submerge the road underneath Pinklao Bridge. Waters have also reached Pata Department Store and Central Pinklao Department Store.
