Thai floods to put brakes on four Toyota plans in North America

30168688-01.jpg

Tokyo - Toyota Motor Corp said Thursday that it would suspend operations at four factories in North America because flooding in Thailand could disrupt supply chains.

Toyota would halt output Saturday at car factories in the central US states of Indiana and Kentucky as well as the Canadian province of Ontario and at an engine production plant in the eastern US state of West Virginia, the company said.

Toyota had yet to decide whether it would halt operations on other days, adding it would monitor the flooding in Thailand, which has affected the suppliers of its car parts.

The company was concerned about potential shortages of about 100 items, such as resin, castings and electronic components produced by the carmaker’s suppliers in Thailand, spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto said.

Toyota’s operations in North America only came back to normal in September after the carmaker was forced to slash global production in the aftermath of the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Wasant appointed Constitutional Court president

The Nation

His Majesty the King has endorsed the appointment of Wasant Soypisut as president of the Constitutional Court, the Senate Secretariat said on Thursday.

The royal command on the Wasant appointment took effect on Wednesday.

Wasant was elected via a peer vote in August to replace Chut Chonlavorn who stepped down after serving three years in office.

The process to issue the royal command took longer than usual due to complaints related to the legal technicality of the peer vote and the justification for Chut to relinquish his position.

Chut left the court presidentcy in the wake of a video clip controversy although he would remain one of the nine justices.

The controversy erupted in 2010 following the posting of five video clips on YouTube. One of the clips showed the edited version of a judicial debate held in private chamber releated to the Democrat Party dissolution case.

Chut's private secretary Pasit Sakdanarong was suspected to be involved in the controversy. Pasit was later cleared of all charges.

Soldiers from all Units Told to Operate at All Flood-Risk Areas

BANGKOK, 27 October 2011 (NNT) - Soldiers from all units have been instructed to assist flood victims and operate at flood-risk areas in the country around the clock.

The instruction was given by Defense Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa, who stressed the readiness of the Army to help ease the flooding situation and the hardships of the affected people.

He also instructed army officials to work with the police in protecting flood walls in eastern Bangkok, and the Navy was also instructed to look after the embankment at the flood gate in the area of Thawi Watthana Canal, in order to protect the city from severe floods.

He stated that a disaster relief operations center had been established at the Royal Army Club on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, and it is now operational to assist flood-hit residents.

The Defense Minister said that the Royal Army Club was also ready to accommodate the Flood Relief Operations Center, if it needed to be relocated from Don Mueang Airport.
