Government Complex braces for rising floodwater

The Government Complex has made preparations to deal with rising floodwater on Chaeng Wattana Road and may relocate flood evacuees sheltered there, a senior official said Monday.

Naris Chaiyasut, the director-general of the Treasury Department, said the relocation of flood evacuees would be the last measure in case of blackout following riside water.

He said so far the evacuees could be moved upstairs.

Naris said officials had placed sandbags around the main power generator of the complex to prevent disruption of power supply.

But if the evacuees had to be moved out, the Social Development and Human Security Ministry would provide vehicles to transport the evacuees to shelters in nearby provinces, Naris said.

Southern violence unabated; multiple overnight bombings in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT, Oct 31 – Incidents apparently linked to Thailand’s southern insurgency continued overnight Sunday as mainly unidentified assailants carried out sequential bombings in six districts of this southern border province Sunday evening, in which no casualties were reported, followed by two bombings Monday morning.

Violence continues unabated with two people lost their legs after stepping on booby trap in Waeng and Srisakhon districts Monday morning. Another roadside bombing occurred in Bacho district with no injury.

In the latest incidents, blasts at Waeng and Srisakhon districts at about 8am today, injuring two villagers.

PVC tubes designed to be triggered when unsuspecting passers-by step on them caused two men to lose legs in Monday morning bomb blasts.

Local authorities said the incidents did not specifically target civilians but were believed intended to further stir disturbances in the strife-torn southern border region.

The Sunday night blasts took place for about half an hour from 5.50 to 6.20pm. The first blasts occurred in two locations of Sungai Padi district. A soft drink can packed with a one kilogramme explosive device was detonated by a timing device at a nearby shop. Another blast went off in front of a military unit near Sungai Padi railway station.

Further bombings took at about the same time at 12 locations in Sungai Kolok, Yingor, Tak Bai, Bacho, Ruso and Mueang districts, with grocery stores mainly targeted. The blasts damaged the structures, but no injuries were reported.

Earlier Sunday, three people were shot dead in the Narathiwat provincial seat. The victims were identified as Sritong Masi, 75, Thirapong Lim, 42 and Mali Masi, 49. All were shot in the heads.

According to a preliminary police investigation, two men on a motorcycle posed as customers to fill their petrol tanks and then gunned down Mr Sritong at a petrol station before targetting Mr Thirapong who was having a massage nearby.

Two more men on a motorcycle stopped at a grocery store operated by Mrs Mali, Mr Sritong's daughter in law, and one shot her in the head before fleeing. (MCOT online news)

Klong Samwa residents demand wider opening of sluice gate

Residents of Klong Samwa district protested Monday to demand the Bangkok administration to open the sluice gate of Klong Samwa Canal to the level of 150 centimetre-high.

The residents protested Sunday night and were trying to demolish the floodgate, leading to a talk, after which the authorities agreed to raise the sluice gate from 75 cm-wide to 80-cm wdie.

The protesters dispersed from the gate early Monday and regrouped later in the day. This time, some 1,000 protesters blocked the Hathai Mitr Road demanding the city administration to raise the gate to be 150 cm-wide to speed up the drainage of floodwater from their area.

But the authorities insisted that the gate could not be raised higher than 80 cm or else other areas would be affected by flooding.
