Sorry about the dramatic title but I cant think of another way to describe this thing that I am booked in for tomorow.

Walking through the mall today I popped into this shop that advertised various gimmicks for weight loss. One of which was a machine that connects up to your stomach through several wires. Kinda like an ECG, but on the stomach. They claim that one 1000 Baht session is the same as doing 300 sit ups.

Im a sucker for gimmicks and my head is saying its just that - a gimmick. Why not give it a try though, anything is worth a go at least once. I was hoping someone here could convince me however that it is not a gimmick and there is a weight loss element involved here?

I am too fat - thats why i am giving it a go - but of course i have started a daily excersise regime of swimming and biking (just an hour) have stopped drinking beer and spirits (2 months already) and have cut out all junk food, sweets, and eat healthy. I have lost 10 kilos in 9 weeks so its a steady weight loss. Just wanted to explain that in case anyone thought i was looking for a magical machine that removes the beer belly. Obviously I know this treatment will not do that.... But if it helps, even just a little, why not?

So.... Anyone know anything about this? Is it a complete and utter con or is there some truth to the claim of 'equivalent of 300 sit ups"?

Cheers

It sounds like a gimmick, but so is peoples belief that situps will burn stomach fat. Situps will increase your muscle mass, but barely burn any fat. If you want to burn fat you have to burn more calories than you consume. Cardio is better for burning calories than situps, anything that gets your heart rate up like running and swimming. Also you need to spend more time doing exercise to burn more calories, 300 situps is like 5 minutes of exercise.

I wouldn't pay 1000 baht for the equivalent of 5 minutes of exercise, it'll take 1 hour to earn the money to pay for it. Rather than working for an hour you can walk for 5 minutes instead.

300 situps will burn about 60 calories.

It is a gimmick....what you are doing as described in your 4th paragraph...is the right way....diet and excercise, 10kg in 9 weeks is almost spot on what you should be targeting ie 1kg a week loss

Like another poster already mentioned, sit ups won't melt the belley fat. That is a common and wrong belief. There are no exercise that targets fat in any speciefic part of human body. However sit ups will give strengh to your ABS and help to keep your guts in which will in turn make your belley look smaller. I am just saying don't completely rule out the sit ups from your exercise list, you need a big of everything to stay fit. Keep eating right and the fat will go away.

Oh, can't say anything about that miracle machine, but when I saw the tread name, it reminded me about the "treatments" of the past, when ecectricity just became widely awailable, there was a belief that giving an electric shock to a patient would treat depression and some other desieses. LOL Don't know if it actually worked. :D
