Q: Late Night Drinking - Past 1am?

I've mates from home visiting Bkk at the moment, so I have to take them out this weekend.

They can't believe that places stop serving booze past 1am, and I'm expected to source a place which opens beyond 1am.

Can anyone please, please, please suggest any places known to open later than 1am?

Cheers!!!

A lot of food stalls will serve grog after 1 am...one in Khao San rd I know of. Also the 3rd floor of the Ruamchit Hotel above the Thermae Cafe will stay open till the girls want to go home, I stayed at the hotel last time and booked in after midnight but was able to get a few beers till about 2:30 am

the stalls along the north side of sukhumvit between nana and asoke will serve beer till the early hours also..

Also as bkkmadness said, the places on the left as u enter ratchada soi 6 are always open late. The disco round the back of there never shut till very late on loy khratong. If ya a group of unacompanyed white guys on the pull, I would give it a miss tho, as its pretty much thai turf :o

RCA, Patpong and (I think) Silom Soi 4 are open until 2am perfectly legally, and there are a couple of normal non-go go bars on Patpong that open beyond that, until 4am or so. Also, for really late options try the Penny Black on Soi Cowboy, the huge rooftop bar on Sukkumvit Soi 1 or there's a bar on Sukkumvit Soi 11 that opens late also. This latter place gets very packed, hot and sweaty though. Sometimes these illegal after hours places don't even open until 3:30 or so and, due to their illegality, may not open at all sometimes.

Whatever happens though, if you're really stuck for options, the street bars on Sukkumvit as mentioned earlier are a safe bet for guaranteed late night boozing. Not particularly classy though!

Interesting, I was in a supermarket yesterday and the bottle-shop was closed, but they were selleing cases of beer etc.

The manager told me that he can sell stuff off the shelf all day like loose bottles and less than 2 carry-out boxes at a time. I would guess there are several interpretations of the law, as Tesco won't sell a thing suring the black-out hours, 7-11 doesn't care and other supermarkets have invented their own rules.

As I only wanted a few beers to wash down lunch with my wife yesterday, I wasn't too worried, so I just popped in at 7 and got my requirements.

So now what I understand is if you are buying loose bottles, you can buy it at any time, but if you want to fill your pick-up with Lao-Khao for the weekend "Up Country" you have to buy it at the correct time.

But I am also probably wrong.

On Saturday night, we found our way to Ratchada Soi 5.

A very local crowd, and a strange vibe.

Not so many foreigners in there, but booze is still for sale but be careful dealing with the staff there who will do all they can to fleece you!

I can't remember what time it closed.

Oh, and it is very possible to score there! :o

Funny. All along the first restrictions(talking the day time ones - not the after midnight one) one could still buy what one wanted if was 10 liters or MORE (I.e. about a case of beers+a couple of cans). Is even posted on the wall at many supermarkets. Cheers!

Yeah, but if you know the correct price and tell them you have absolutely no problem with them at all. They put the prices in Thai so tourists don't know how much to pay. Just say last time you paid 400 for Spey, and that's what you'll pay instead of a 1000. And if they've seen you before they never even bother trying to overcharge you.

And as for the late night stuff, last time I was in the beer hall in soi Hollywood the police came and turned the music off at 2am. You could still drink, but it was pretty boring and most people leaving.

Rachada 88 Kung Phao, owned by actress Porntip Papanai, aka 'Cartoon',  off Ratchada Rd, serves food and booze all night.

Seems like Rachada is the place to be for late night boozing... may have to wander over there some day.

Got a good market as well, and loads of decent cheap accomodation. Also a bloody great big huge fish restaurant.Mmmmmmm very nice :o

The 45 rpm covers are on the wall; the opening (and closing) times *are* erratic. But it isn't from the Vietnam War era--it was opened in the early/mid-80s and ran under the original owner (Wong) until he died 2 1/2 years ago from lung cancer. His brother "manages" the place now.

Matt, I think they've got it arse about. The law allows you to buy large quantities between 2 and 5. I think it is slightly more than a case of beer. This is so wholesalers can still operate during these hours. As with most of these rediculous laws most of the small and out of the way places are just ignoring the law. Some of the Tescos and the likes have just made it their own policy to have a blanket ban,but they could sell in wholesale quantities between 2 and 5 if they wanted to.
