I have just got my mother to send a case over, containing some things from home and I got an email from thai customs requring a copy of my passport and a list of the contents inside as I will have to pay duty and tax.

Has anyone ever had to deal with something like this before?

Inside I have my new iphone which is a replacement for one I broke so I paid £30 for the replacement. Also have 2 cctv cameras I have sent over, presents for our baby, old clothes of mine and old shoes.

I am just wondering if they are out to try and make some money from me? are they going to open the case and charge me for every single thing in the case?

My guess is that your package already has been opened, and after seeing the new phone and cameras the customs decided to tax you. Had it only been used stuff inside I don't think they would have bothered.

Just a guess, though.

Please post updates!

I went to pick up a box of personal items at the cargo terminal at the airport.

The place is run by thugs.

The security guard directed me to a guy that wrote 8,000 B on a scrap of paper. I declined and they got rude and aggressive.

When I phoned the shipping company the nice lady said, "be careful out there".

In fact, there are big warning signs, warning customers not to deal with unauthorized personnel. There were many "agents" set up on the docks and in the parking lot running scams.

I could not get cooperation from any officials as they seemed afraid to help someone that insisted on professional treatment.

On my next attempt to pick up (with a Thai friend) the price went up and storage fees added.

The next time I had something shipped, I used BAX Global. Again, got scammed. The BAX company could only give a receipt for a portion of the "tax." Had to pay a wad of cash under the table.

They have your stuff and you WILL pay.

This kind of crap has chased away many large companies and is costing Thailand dearly.

I had a case sent over not so long ago and it came easy with no problems, they now want me to send in my passport. I do have the option of allowing DHL to deal with them, do you think thats a better option?

Is there an option to just say ahhh sod it return it to sender because if its going to cost me a fortune id rather send the bloody thing back than to have them scam me out of money.

How are they scamming you out of money ?

You imported items into a foreign country and now they want their customs duties and probably the 7% VAT that you avoided by not buying the item here

As far a returning it to sender, just who do you think is going to pay for the return ? DHL, I think not, most likely it will go into a customs warehouse where it will either disappear or be sold at a future Customs auction

so much talk about duties and customs,my twf spent 20years in the uk.she had a collection of shoes, bags, clothes and a lot of personel items, she sent over 30small boxes 3cubic mts.in total all used nothing new when it arrived at the docks the agent contacted her to arrange delivery, there was paper work with every box stateing what was in them, what followed the next few days was nothing but fraud and extorsion,i wont go into any details but it came to a head when they wanted to now what size were photo's and some paintings, they made her pay 12,000bht and not a customs stamp on the invoice at all,but someone had written in her passport duty paid, yet according to customs web sight there is no duty on second hand goods brought into los by a thai national that has lived abroad for a certain time.some posters have been lucky but they will get you in the end.[is that not a scam]

work with them all the time, fax the invoice, pay tax and duty exactly as the law requires. The "thugs" do all the paperwork, handling carrying the boxes. When my staff arrive he just need to pick it up. Costs 300 Baht
