Cashing American Express Traveler'S Checks

Featured Replies

Hi! I have been to Thailand before and have noticed that the ATM currency conversion fees, etc charged by US banks are excessive. Therefore, I have decided to bring some American Express (AMEX) Traveler's Checks to Thailand. I know there is a 33 Baht government charge per check. However, that is not my concern. I want to know if Thai banks will accept $1000 US AMEX traveler's checks? If not, what is the largest denomination they will accept? $500, $100, $50 or $20? What kind of experience have you had?

I'd say 100's. That will get you 3000thb per, cash two of those every few days and you'll be fine.

I used to cash 1000 note T checks at Bangkok bank all the time and the rate was same as cash with no charges applied, just a passport with the same name as the checks and bingo.

Would you advise a traveler to be walking around with 30,000thb cash? Seems risky.....

Depending on where and when you choose to walk - ya - no problem. Besides 30k won't last vary long anymore anyway. :jap:
