UK citizen, over 50.

I entered Thailand on a Multiple Entry ED Visa, valid for 1 year, on 19th Sept, and was granted 90 days stay, as expected.

I would like to do a normal 90 day extension of stay ay Immigration (Chiangmai), but the school I am studying with seem to think that the Multiple Entry will be cancelled if I make an extension, and that I should make a border run.

I know the border run would be marginally cheaper, but it will waste a day. I have been to Mae Sai before, not impressed.

Can anyone clarify the situation with regard to in-country extensions on a Multiple Entry Visa please?

Thanks

It seems to be luck of the draw but suspect if you want to be sure you should make border runs or if you plan continued study obtain extension and plan to use that method onward.

Although the visa is for 1 year, rhe allowable periods of stay are 90 days, Upon initial entry you get 90 days, You must show up with1900 baht and a letter from the school showing that you are attending to extend it for each 90 day period thereafter.

I always thought the normal extension for an education extension was a 1 year extension.

The extension of stay is "up to 1 year" and for part time language study most offices will not provide more than 3 month extension each time.

I wasn't aware about this choice of attending the local immigration office or completing a visit to the border every 90 days?

If you choose to go to the border every 90 days how much do you pay for the extension then and is it usually hassle free?

Only if you obtain a one year multi entry visa from a Consulate can you exit/return for new 90 day stays for a year (and not all will issue more than single entry). The cost for visa would be 5,000 baht plus trip plus visa for other country (you exit/enter/exit/enter every 90 days or less). With proper paperwork from school every 3 months a new extension of stay can be obtained from Immigration (but without paperwork it could not be).

Ok...I understand now...this is for a language school and not for study at a university. I get a one year extension every year (for the last 5 years)for study at my university. I only have to do 90 day reports...but I don't mind those since they are free and relatively fast.

Am curious to know where the OP obtained his/her 'Non Imm O' Multi- entry? As Neighbouring countries, and Hull are no longer issuing multi-entry only single entry

I think doing border runs every 90days on a multi-entry must be more straightforward, than entering on a Single-entry and having to extend at Immigration ?

This thread is about multiple ED-visa, not a multiple non-O visa.

Hull does indeed since recently not issue a multiple non-ED, but does still issue multiple non-O's if you qualify.

Sorry I meant to say 'Non Im Ed' - I put 'O' by mistake.

Also you do not risk an mini language exam like big" fish eat small fish " (In Thai) by immigration to test your learning improvement , as on border they just stamp your passport no hassle , and you can leave and come Thailand as often if needed ,as no need for re entrys with a multiple ED visa

not forgetting to do your last visa run just before expierng date from visa , so you make almost 15 months out the year ;)

Multiple Entry ED Visa was obtained from the Thai Consulate (1 man) in Gibraltar, in August.

Very helpful man; while you wait service.

I was living in Southern Spain at time so no problem getting there. The Thai Embassy in Madrid is very unhelpful, and would not recommend it, even for a Tourist Visa.
