BMA issues flood warning advisory for Prawet, Saphan Sung and Bangkok Yai

BANGKOK, Nov 12 -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Saturday issued flood alerts and evacuation advisories for residents in Prawet, Saphan Sung and Bangkok Yai.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said that the overall situation of flooding in Bangkok was gradually improving as water levels were likely decreasing.

However, there were some areas that the flooding was expanding into, so the BMA issued an advisory for flood and evacuation alerts for residents of 22 communities in Prawet subdistrict of Prawet district and Saphan Sung subdistrict in Saphan Sung district.

Meanwhile, he said, the BMA also issued an warning advisory for five areas in Bangkok Yai district, urging residents to closely monitor the flood situation, move their valuable items to higher ground and be prepared for possible evacuation.

BMA shelters were preparing for the flood victims.

The governor said that BMA's Centre of Flood Relief Operation planned to push water in canals in order to protect Rama 2 Road, the major route to the southern provinces, from deep flood and avoid severe damage as were occurring at Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and Petch Kasem Road.

MR Sukhumbhand told reporters, after inspecting the flood situation at Thawi Watthana and Bang Khae districts, that the situation to the west of Bangkok was still worrisome as water kept overflowing into the areas.

He said, therefore, the earlier BMA projection that the water would be receding in two weeks would be difficult.

Meanwhile, the floodwater clogging several areas of Bangkok continued to lower. The water level on Ratchadaphisek Road near the Chao Phraya Park Hotel fell to 22-34 centimetres deep. (MCOT online news)

Don Mueang residents want 'big bags' to be removed

Some 80,000 Bangkok's Don Mueang district residents reportedly have signed a petition asking the National Flood Relief Operation Center (FROC) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to remove the "Big Bag" giant sandbag floodwall.

They claimed that such floodwall caused floodwater in Don Muaeng to remain and not lowering. Previously BMA had open a six-meter section of the floodwall for them, but the residents weren't satisfied.

However, FROC director and Justice Minister Pracha Promnok dismissed the report saying that the group didn't submit any such petition hence he would investigate what's going on first.
