UN chief to see Bangkok flood zones on Asia tour

UNITED NATIONS, November 12, 2011 (AFP) - UN leader Ban Ki-moon will inspect flood-stricken zones of Bangkok during a three-nation Asian tour next week taking him to the ASEAN-UN summit, officials said Friday.

The UN secretary general will visit Bangladesh, Thailand and Indonesia during the tour starting Monday.

Ban will visit flood affected areas in Bangkok on Wednesday, said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky. More than 530 people have died in the devastating floods in Thailand.

Ban will hold talks with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in Bangkok and give an address on universal health coverage.

The UN leader starts the tour in Bangladesh where he will focus on women and children's health. Ban is to go to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Dhaka on Monday and a community clinic in the remote town of Moulavibizaar.

Ban is also to meet with Bangladesh government and opposition leaders.

In Indonesia, Ban will visit a health clinic in Central Kalimantan province on Thursday before heading to the summit with Association of Southeast Asian Nations leaders in Bali on Friday and Saturday.
