Pillow Talk Column – Guru Magazine

Has anyone been reading the “Pillow Talk” column appearing recently in the Guru Magazine? (Guru Magazine is published by the Bangkok Post as a weekly entertainment magazine, and is distributed in Friday’s edition of the paper.) Guru has been around for ~ 4 months but this column, penned by a duo with the sobriquets ‘Vickie Vixen’ and ‘Felicity Fox’, has been a recent appearance. I’ve only read the past three editions, including today’s. Anyway, it is an absolute hoot although I’m not sure that is the intention! It’s a sort of rip-off/copy of Candace Bushnell’s column in New York Observer, which back in the mid-/late-90s exposed the sexual escapades of the New York City’s social elite. (Bushnell was the inspiration for the “Sex in the City” series on HBO, with Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw, based on Bushnell).

It’s hard to figure the target audience for the column? Farang men? HiSo/Inter Thai men & women? I have seen a handful of Thai professional, junior/mid-level manager types, women reading the column on the BTS, the last two Fridays. Last week I caught the eye of one, and gave “what’s up with that” gesture (upward head nod, smile, quizzical look) towards her edition, which resulted in a broad smile.

The past columns I read were quite racy given the conservative nature of Thai society. There were rankings of the different type of eligible boyfriends with graphic descriptions of their purported ability to satisfy women, broad and frequent references to oral sex, female (multiple) orgasm, multiple, frequent partners, well, you get the idea.

I think the powers that be must have taken notice as Vickie and Felicity’s wings have been clipped. Today’s column starts off…

“After receiving a lot of great feedback (note the authors sprang for a gmail account) from readers, there were some people who got the impression that we are encouraging girls to go out and hook up and sleep around. (This is in fact exactly what they were doing.) Do understand that this is NOT what we are preaching. (now)”

And this column proceeds to provide advice on communications between girls and boys, targeted at the typical fourteen year-old, with nothing racier than, “Don’t talk to someone when you’re drunk.”

Have others been reading this column? Do you think it is supposed to be serious?

All the columns I have read thus far have been desperate-for-attention sounding, trying to shock you tby saying hat Thai folks actually partake in sex and things like that, because if you were to believe the way Thailand is from what a Thai would tell you, then nobody has sex, nobody does naughty things and everybody is pure as the driven snow, as its the farangs only that do such bad things!

The whole magazine is crap.

I keep trying to imagine a group of executives sitting around at the Post and telling each other that this sophomoric rubbish really has an audience, but I have an even harder time trying to imagine what they think that audience is.

Surely not foreigners or the visitors/hotel/airplane/corporate market that keeps the Post alive. Do they think this is a way to get young English-speaking Thais to read the paper? Wow, could the powers at the Post really think that young English-speaking Thais are THIS dumb? I say the Ministry of Culture should crack down on these folks for anti-Thai behavior.

All in all, I like the Guru tabloid more or less. However, looking at the latest cover story regarding 'hot sites' (or words to that effect) the #1 Expat site in Thailand (Thai Visa) was overlooked? Bit of a miss there
