If someone has a current 60 day thai tourist visa and applies for the 30 day extension at immigration, are they likely to be knocked back if they've had one or more 30 day extensions on previous Thai tourist visas?

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere - did a forum search and went through 5 threads without getting the answer I was after.

No, immigration won't worry about it, but, certain embassies will not give you another tourist visa if you have extended a previous tourist visa. The Thai embassy in Penang operates like this.

Righto. Thanks KB.

Is Penang the exception? ie Do embassies elsewhere not worry so much about previous extensions?

Sorry, I don't know about other Thai embassies, but, I do know that Penang will refuse another tourist visa if a previous one has been extended.

Thai embassies all seem to have their own rules, so, info for Penang will not be relevant for other embassies in the region.

I see.

I actually have two passports - one Aus, one Brit - I wonder if they'd grant a tourist visa in the (empty) British passport?

I guess if the entry stamp to Malaysia is missing (in the Aus passport) they might ask a few questions.

You can't switch passports and most embassies care more how many visa's you have then if you extended it or not. I can tell you Laos didn't care about my extensions.

your Brit passport should not be empty.

When trying to depart Thailand with your Brit passport they would ask to see your arrival stamp and TM6.

Upon trying to get a Visa at a local Consulate they will notice no departure stamp from Thailand and would not grant you one.

Edited to make it easier to read

Alright - so once you leave your home country on one passport, you have to continue travelling on that passport alone until you come back.

Was looking at Laos as a possible next destination, so maybe it's time to give Penang a miss.

And it is very easy to switch passports on air entry and not at all sure Consulate would even check for a current entry stamp for visa issue. It is visa exempt land boarder that presents the big problem for passport switch.

Wait - so if I flew out of Thailand on an Aus passport I could use my Brit passport on arrival into, say, Malaysia ...then get the next Thai visa stamp in the Brit passport?

PS The extension was granted without any issues.

The official I saw was already making a grabbing motion and saying "Give me 1900 baht!" before he even looked at my passport.

Works for me.
