Italy's new government sworn in

2011-11-17 18:46:54 GMT+7 (ICT)

ROME (BNO NEWS) -- Italy's new government led by Prime Minister Mario Monti was sworn in on late Wednesday afternoon during a ceremony in Rome. It revived hopes that Italy can steer itself out of the current debt crisis.

Mario Monti and 16 new ministers took their oaths of allegiance before President Giorgio Napolitano. "The task is difficult, but the mood is positive," Napolitano said, as quoted by the ANSA news agency. "There are already signs of faith from the European Union."

Earlier on Wednesday, Monti unveiled his team of ministers for an emergency government of national unity tasked with steering Italy out of its debt crisis. As expected, the team was composed of experts in their respective fields who are not politicians.

'"During the talks I came to the conclusion that the absence of political personalities in the government will help it rather than hinder it," the 68-year-old Monti told a press conference. "It will remove one source of embarrassment (about the policies)."

Former European Commissioner Monti, who will serve as both premier and interim minister of economy and finance in the new government, said he is confident that the pressure on Italy's bonds and shares will now ease. "We feel certain about what we have done and we have received lots of encouraging signals from our European partners and the rest of the world," he said, as quoted by ANSA.

Monti, who was recently named Senator for life in the Italian Senate, was appointed on Sunday after Silvio Berlusconi resigned as the country's prime minister a day earlier. Berlusconi had repeatedly rejected opposition calls for his resignation, despite being hit by numerous sex and corruption scandals as well as local election and referendum defeats.

Berlusconi, who won several parliamentary confidence votes during his term, led Italy as prime minister since May 2008. Before that, he served as prime minister from May 1994 until January 1995 and from June 2001 until May 2006. He also held several positions as minister.
