PAD Threatens Protest if Govt Continues Amnesty Push

The founder of the People's Alliance for Democracy reiterates that his group will make a move if the government is persistent in passing a royal pardon decree to acquit former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of his crime.

In an interview given during ASTV's News Hour program, People's Alliance for Democracy founder Sondhi Limthongkul said the Cabinet's secret meeting on issues surrounding a royal pardon decree has demonstrated the shameful behavior of politicians who will do anything for personal gain.

It is a proof that the Pheu Thai-led government is here to serve self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and bring him home safely.

The Cabinet allegedly held a secret meeting on Tuesday to discuss changes to the decree on a royal pardon with an aim to help Thaksin, who was convicted in the Ratchadaphisek land corruption case.

Sondhi said to prove her sincerity, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra should tell her brother to return home and serve his sentence first before seeking royal clemency.

He added the Cabinet's move is a violation of the rule of the law and an insult to the royal institution and the public.

The PAD founder said he once said his group will make a move if there are efforts to bring Thaksin back and wipe the slate clean for him.

He added all PAD leaders will meet next week to determine the group's position.

It seems to be the only choice.

I feel sorry for the PAD members...hard month to come and many will be killed by the criminal government.

Geriatric terrorists. Them army snipers have had no practice for a while. If its good for them red oiks its good for the yellow cronies. If Sondhi is serious and the yellows set up camp, take over airports, block up the city even burn buildings not one army trigger will be pulled.

I think that once the demonstrations start, deaths and injuries are inevitable. It's Thaksin's final battle. If he can't squash the opposition with Jatuporn's Red Guard, he'll probably never be able to return / stay. Prompong will be busy with his brown envelopes soon sueing Aphisit for everything. If Thaksin can get a relation in charge of the Army, goodness knows what will happen.

The PAD has been under appreciated for the service they did for the country. They are about to be appreciated again. I didn't necessarily agree with their methods, but having seen how much worse the reds were, I guess the ground rules are now set as to how this game will be played.

If I'm the PAD I'm going to go after sea ports and railways this time. Bring the import/export market to its knees. Given the floods have already crippled industry the damage there will be minimized, but killing the supply chains will have a dramatic effect on the population. Force the government to look incompetent or fire first. Then the yellows become the oppressed demonstrators, and the civil war can begin between the red government and the yellow freedom fighters.

I would not mind betting that if PAD start protesting with large numbers and the Red thugs go up against them, then the Army will get involved and triggers will be pulled. Do agree however that the targets will not be the Yellow shirts. In some ways it would be good for the convicted criminal fugitive to get his amnesty as several final solutions could be found once and for all.

I have only been in Thailand for about a year and a half, but from watching the news both in Australia and here I have only seen people wearing red setting fire to buildings both in Bangkok and up north.

with burning buildings they would get a trademark lawsuit from the red shirts.

Yellow: sit in at the airport, singing patriotic songs, anti-smoke-drink-gamble propaganda, promoting democracy...

Red: shooting with AKA47, M79, burning buildings beating people to death, commies propaganda, promoting Thaksin...

hmm hard to choose.....

There is a reason for that.

"If you seize power from us, then we'll burn the whole country down. Burn it, burn everything, my brothers — Guarantee: Bangkok will turn into a sea of flames. Those of you who live in the country, it's OK if you cannot join us. If anything happens, just gather at your provincial or city halls. No need to wait for the order. Burn your city halls down to the ground." Jutaporn from the red stage in Bangkok.

Lets hope they target something other than airports.

That would be one more nail in the tourism coffin, if they went for the airports again.

Edit : beaten to it by webfact !! The office for the Council of State ;-)

That was quite a speech he gave.

Thankfully not all red supporters where so short sighted.

The city and provincial halls are quite handy to have around, when you are in government yourself.....

No, that isn't going to happen.

PAD to rally against amnesty decree Monday

The People's Alliance for Democracy will Monday hold a rally against a draft decree reportedly aimed at providing royal pardon for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

PAD spokesman Parnthep Puaphanpong posted a message on his Facebook page that the yellow-shirt movement would stage a rally in front of the Council of State on Monday from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Cabinet has approved a draft decree to seek royal pardon for convicts on the occasion of His Majesty the King's birthday. Thaksin's opponents that the decree's criteria would make it eligible for Thaksin to receive royal pardon for his two-year jail term.
