Vietnamese 'detain' Gary Glitter

Former British rock star Gary Glitter was detained at the international airport in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City following allegations that he indulged in lewd acts with a child, state-controlled media reported.

Glitter was stopped by an immigration officer when he recalled that the name in Glitter's passport matched a newspaper article he had read about the former rocker being wanted, said a newspaper web site.

Glitter was trying to board a flight to Bangkok when he was stopped.

The case has been highly publicised in Vietnam after it became known that police were investigating him on charges of "obscene acts with a child," a newspaper said.

Glitter, 61, who has been living in the coastal resort of Vung Tau since March, had been seen with two Vietnamese girls whom he later took to his home, the newspaper said.

Vung Tau police said Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was allegedly involved with two girls under the age of 18.

Earlier this week, the Foreign Ministry said authorities had interviewed a 15-year-old girl they found in Glitter's home, ministry spokesman Le Dung said.

"If evidence of a (legal) violation is found against Mr Paul Francis, and especially evidence of sexual child abuse, I believe that very strict legal measures will apply to him," he said.

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail sentence before being released.

He later went to Cambodia and was permanently expelled in 2002.

His history is very telling. He shacked up with his missus in the westcountry when she was under 16, he used to make her dress up in her school uniform. Also accused of fiddling with his daughters friend (aged 8 or 9).

Of course he was never found guilty of these things in court, but the former was commonly known and not disputed while the latter was only made public after he was found with 4,000 pictures of prepubescent children being sexually abused on his computer. I think he may have had some DVD's too.

But I do like his music, I was going to buy his greatest hits CD the week the police raided his house. I decided not to in the end. It is all such a pity as so many people liked his music and persona but he turned out to be a sleaze.

True, but there is very strong circumstantial evidence that he has been with young girls in Cuba, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Even if there is a remotely small chance he could be innocently 'hanging around' with kids, after getting caught with pics he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near minors.

He should stay away from them himself to stop incidents like this occuring.

We all know it's almost certain he's been up to no good with these girls, so with a bit of luck he'll be eating rice porridge vietnam style

UK officials visit Glitter in Vietnam

Former glam rock star Gary Glitter has been visited by UK officials in Vietnam after being arrested for child sex charges.

He is being questioned by Vietnamese authorities over allegations of "obscene acts with a child", after an arrest warrant was issued last week.

British consular officials saw Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, in the coastal town of Vung Tau, where he has lived for the past six months.

Glitter, 61, was stopped from leaving Vietnam yesterday when an immigration officer at Ho Chi Minh City airport recognised him from media coverage.

A Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesman said authorities had interviewed a 15-year-old girl they had found at his home.

The singer was reported to have absconded with a second girl, aged 14, who described him as her husband.

It was unclear from reports whether Glitter had been travelling alone when he was arrested at the airport or whether he was with the 14-year-old girl.

British officials confirmed that Glitter would have access to a lawyer, and described the Vietnamese authorities as very co-operative.

If convicted he could be jailed for up to 12 years.

In 1999, he was found guilty in the UK of possessing child pornography and was locked up for two months.track

I would suggest that having pictures of nud_e children in sexual positions on your computer is paedophilia, as would teh judge who sent him to prison for it. By creating a demand for those pictures he has been directly involved in the molestation of the children pictured in the photos he got off on.

A Peadophile is someone that is sexually interested in young children - GG definitely fits in this category or he wouldn't have had so much kiddy porn on his PC. Being a peadophile doesn't necessarily mean that you mess with kids though...

A pederast on the other hand is someone who has illegal sex with children. I believe the word pederast refers generally to sexy with young boys. I'm not sure if there's a word specifically for people that have illegal sex with young girls.

Disgraced Seventies rock star Gary Glitter has been accused of having sex with two girls - one aged just 12, police said today

The girls told the authorities they had sex with the former glam rocker at his home in Vietnam, according to police.

The 61-year-old, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was arrested on Saturday at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City as he tried to flee the country.

He left his rented home in the southern resort of Vung Tau a week ago amid allegations about his relationships with two teenage girls.

Glitter has been taken back to Vung Tau for further investigation by the police.

He has not been charged with any crime but remains in custody at a jail outside the coastal city, police said.

Vung Tau police said today they were continuing to investigate the case and will be questioning him further.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the arrest of a British national and consular support is being provided."

In Vung Tau, a police officer said the two girls, aged 12 and 18, claimed in interviews with police that they had gone to Glitter's home and had sex with him there.

There were conflicting reports that the second girl had not yet turned 18.

Under Vietnamese law, sexual contact with a minor carries varying degrees of penalties, depending on the charge.

"Obscene acts with a child" can lead to up to 12 years in prison while child rape carries the maximum penalty of death before a firing squad.

"Having sex with a 12-year-old girl, regardless of whether he had her consent, is still considered child rape under Vietnamese law," the police officer said.

The case has been highly publicised in the state-controlled media, which had reported that Glitter was seen in Vung Tau with several teenage girls, whom he invited to his home, since moving to the area in March.

Thanh Nien (Youth) newspaper reported today that the two girls were invited to Glitter's home, where he paid them for sex.

The 12-year-old told police she had sex three times with Glitter, who paid her £5.50 each time, the paper said.

Police would not confirm whether either of the girls claimed they were paid for sex.

Last week, the foreign ministry said Glitter had been living in Vung Tau since March and had applied for permanent resident status in Vietnam.

Authorities interviewed a 15-year-old girl they found in Glitter's home, ministry spokesman Le Dung said.
