The Black Population In Bangkok.

They are still around they have simply moved deeper into BKK. They had taken over the bar next door to foodland in soi 5 and then it closed so they have moved into the little soi that joins 5 to 7 and are regulars at a few of the cheaper bars. There is a sign in the very first bar in that little alley that says "we do not service the black man here because to many problems" The bar is owned by 2 thai guys.

great sign

That's not nice but we all know such blatant bigotry is perfectly legal in Thailand.

indians in the soi not the club that is

Bed Supperclub is a part of a hospitality industry consortium group owned by a Thai Sikh family.

Of course that you didn't see -your own terms- Indians inside the club,...

Just because the philistine that you must be doesn't have any access to the VIP lounges cool.gif

Why not pop in for a visit the next time you are in town JT, may change your opinion.

Outside Foodland on soi 5 as mentioned by another poster is a sight to behold, after sampling those delights wait until sundown then mosey on up a bit further to soi 13.

May well be the sign was stating the simple truth.

Next time I am over in On Nut I will take a photo and post it, those of a PC mindset better not read, gotta love this country, none of your western facist PC BS.

A couple of African gents treated a local "working girl" to some of their cultural practices, the much maligned motorcy taxi drivers dispensed some street style justice.

Guess the visitors found out that "such blatant bigotry" wouldnt be tolerated.

The Thai government has an agreement with the UN. Basically the UN pay Thailand to take in African refugees untill they are prosesed for resettlement. The Black people get a small weekly allowance to live.

Did you think that Thailand would let them in for extended periods if there was no monitary gain for them? c'mon

BTW....as told to me by an African refugee in Bkk that has been here for over 2 years waiting for his case to be processed....no doubt next stop England - The dust bin of Europe -

I'm sure there are criminals among all groups. The point is that it isn't fair to pre-judge individual people based on skin color. That happens to us light skinned people enough in Thailand that we should know better. Among the Africans, my understanding is that many of them are here as legal, legitimate traders mostly in clothing.

I also don't doubt in many countries, specific subgroups of people sometimes have much higher rates of criminality than other groups. But it is never anywhere near 100 percent, so if you are a member of that group and not a criminal, it is outrageously unfair by definition.

I don't think it's a big deal but I think calling the people you are seeing in Nana Africans rather than blacks would be better.

How do you know they are Africans? They could be British, French, American or many other nationalities.

I never said they are all Africans. White people are often generally called Europeans. The naming thing is always a rough business.

Interesting that speaking up for reasonable tolerance is called fascist.

I'm not saying don't be wary about groups of people you have personally had disproportionate bad experiences with. Not saying don't notice their differences. That's human nature and nobody can change that. Just saying to be fair to individuals and more open minded as your prejudices don't always reflect the truth.

Now these Africans really are sounding like the Indians in Pattaya. my guess is the Thai government has the same agreement with the Africans that they have with the Pattaya Indians. you never see an Indian having to do a visa run.

One nasty post has been removed and some, but not all, off-topic posts have been removed.

I seldom get down in the area being discussed. I know there are a number of well-educated Africans in Bangkok and I know several who are teachers--and quite good. I also know that they won't go down in that area at all.

Black, white, yellow, whatever...it is the circumstances which matter more than skin color.

I went to Bourbon Street for their Thanksgiving dinner today. I was bach'ing it, so I took a seat at the bar instead of waiting for a table for one. Two black guys (and a white guy) joined me, all within a few minutes. Figuring they were American, that trumped anything else and we jumped right into the National Football League, arguing and agreeing about things which, as American men, interest us. No consideration was given to age, race, whatever else.

I had to walk off some of the feast, so I took a jaunt down the Suk. While walking, two youngish black guys pounced up and started to chat about something in an overly-friendly manner. And yes, I took in their race, their African accents, and their eager demeanor and quickly strode ahead, avoiding eye contact.

Racist? Maybe, but I think it is a logical reaction to men who act in such a way and fit the profile of drug dealers or scammers. And if these were just two friendly guys, I apologize now. I ignore the Thai touts as well, and if I was back in the US, I would treat two white guys acting in the same manner just as I did here.

Yes well this is not a racist post against anybody and was never meant to be it was only an observation that was made having not been to Bangkok in years. it could well have been about the increase in any race of people or the increase in stray cats :D

Try this link for a definition of fascism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism

Heavy going, even the experts cant agree.

Copied from the above link,

"Many fascist movements support the creation of a totalitarian state"

Clicking on the above, takes us to the following,

"Totalitarianism (or totalitarian rule) is a political system where the state recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible"

Sound familiar?

Some may recognise it as Euro Socialist LaLa Land.

Nobody's expecting that. However, jumping for joy over racist signs and business policies isn't exactly heart warming stuff.

Correct !! There are two factors at play here, the fact that they are black is only a descriptive, the fact that they are black and congregating in gangs in that area is an indicator. The first time I can remember being to a Doctor it was a Black African and boy was I happy to see him. So how about we just stick to the descriptive and leave out the implied racism.

So on that note on my first trip to BKK I was down that neck of the woods and I found the presence of gangs of Black Africans intriguing, no more, no less. Once they started trying to hassle me into buying drugs I found it annoying, and being hassled by the same group every time I left my hotel became irritating.

Just the same way I used to get irritated by Timeshare touts on my case in Tenerife, Romanian beggars on the streets of the UK, Jehovahs Witnesses knocking my door offering me salvation, and ignorant people in bars talking about how they are ex-SAS and connected to the Mafia.

Every social group has the ability to irritate in it's own way.

ps the word Pogrom is incorrectly used, it is mainly associated with violent outbursts such as what happened on Kristallnacht , where the victims were Jewish and the perps were the Nazi Germans. I think most Pogroms in the last century were anti-Jewish affairs though I'm not sure if Pogroms as such are exclusive to them.

It's interesting ( and I didn't know ) that the Black Africans alluded to are most likely UN Refugees. It reminds me of a situation during the Kosovan War, when refugees were moved en-masse to the UK under a UN charter. As they were under UN protection they were unable to claim refugee status in the UK, and once things settled down the UK removed them en-masse back to Kosovo. So far so good, I don't think any right thinking person would deny families safety and protection during a war situation. What I could not believe, and I witnessed it myself, was that as the Refugees were under UN Protection it was extremely difficult to prosecute them for any crime committed in the UK, so the police took an attitude of control and return rather than arrest and prosecute. The Kosovans soon realized that and went on brazen shop lifting expeditions, knowing at worst they would get caught, get the goods taken from them and be returned to their tax payer funded flat.

There truly is nowt queerer than folk........and that UN status would account for large groups of Africans appearing and disappearing at the same time in BKK.
