Hi, forum members with visa experience.

I apparently made a huge mistake by arriving in Thailand on an "O" visa based on marriage to a thai. My mistake was listening to someones advice who told me that I could visit the Philippines to see a friend without any problems. When I returned yesterday I was just thrilled to find out that I have to re-apply for a new 90 day "O" visa. They told me at the airport that they would give me a 30 day visa but I had to apply for a replacement visa outside of Thailand. When I looked on this forum for answers for my problems I couldn't locate an answer but perhaps it was my using incorrect "search" arguments for answers.

I currently have a "yellow book", a valid Thai license/ID, etc. In addition I am 60 yeas old and have 400,000 baht in a bank because I was using that for my now useless "O" visa.

Any recommendations?

Thanks, in advance for any help.

Are you married to a Thai? The 400k is an immigration requirement for one year extension of stay for that - marriage requires the 400k. So did you have a Consulate visa or an immigration extension of stay? From that information we can provide your options.

"a new 90 day "O" visa"

"a 30 day visa"

There is no such thing as a 90 day visa or a 30 day visa. The shortest visa is a 60 day tourist visa.

People really need to try to clarify their terms. There are significant differences between permission to stay, extension of stay, permission to re-enter, visa, and visa exempt stamps acquired at the airport or border.

The OP now appears to have a 30 day visa exempt stamp.

He can convert that at immigration to a Non Imm Visa if part of the process for a 12 month extension of stay.

He can then apply for the 12 month extension based on having a Thai Wife.

2,000 baht for the conversion and 1,800 baht for the extension.

Not all Immigration offices will do this. they might send you To Bangkok.

Get a 60 day extension from immigration based on marriage without showing any money in bank.

From Police order 777/2551

2.24 In the case of an alien visiting a Thai spouse or child:

Permission will be granted for a period of not more than 60 days at a time.

(1) Proof of relationship.

(2) In the case of a spouse, their marital relationship shall be de jure (legitimate) and de facto.

He admitted his mistake in his post "listening to someone's advice" who obviously didn't have a clue about what they were talking about. Either he left on a single entry visa or on and extension of stay for marriage without getting a re-entry permit.

Sounds like the op came to Thailand and left without a re-entry permit and blew his 90 day non-o visa

Indeed, I did blow my 90 day Non-O single entry visa. Sorry I didn't respond to this forum earlier but yesterday my wife and I were in Bangkok sorting out my mistake. After providing proof of 400k in an account in my name, photos of my wife and I, copies of marriage certificate, etc. I was approved for a new 90 day NON-O visa. I have to go back to Bangkok in 14 days to pick up my new visa. NEVER again will I trust anyone who thinks they know the rules. I will have to diligently research all information and include this forum if I need more advise. Aside from the drive from Chonburi to Bangkok and a 2K baht fee I probably got off easy and learned a valuable lesson. Bye the way, the woman who helped us at the government center was really helpful and pleasant.

Sooooo. Anyone with a SINGLE ENTRY Non-O visa, don't be stupid like me and have to jump through hoops to correct avoidable mistakes.

Thanks to the forum members for your prompt responses.

Suspect your friend believed you had a multi entry non immigrant O visa rather than the single entry you actually had. If you had the multi entry and still valid you would just get a new 90 day stay on return and re-entry would not be required. Normally we only think of re-entry usage when on extensions of stay from immigration; but in this case you needed to keep the non immigrant entry in order to later extend your stay. But now you are back on track and if you need to exit again will know a re-entry permit is first step. After you get the one year extension of stay you might want to obtain one just as insurance for any sudden travel requirement.

Okay, point taken on the transit visa or visa on arrival. Never having needed either, I forgot about those.

When someone does a 90 day border run, do they return with a new visa?

My point really is that so much of the question and confusion on this forum is really about terminology.

They return on a new permitted to stay stamp (entry). They may or may not be using a visa to obtain that stay.

Think of the visa as a party invitation that you exchange for a stamp at the door which actually allows you entry and stay.
