I fancied a curry this evening, and rather than cook my own I had a look at what Rimping had to offer. They have a new frozen curry section called Curry Nights (British Indian Restaurant Curry), not sure how long it has been there.

I tried the chicken Rogan Josh and it was very good and a good sized portion for 159Baht. I also had the onion bahjee, which was very tasty, though I think I should have put it in the oven rather than microwave it.

For rice I just used the standard Thai rice that is allways available at home.

Definately worth trying if you like your British style curries.

ps. I have no financial ties to either Rimping or Curry Nights!

The frozen curries in Rimping seem to be priced more expensively than actually purchasing the dish freshly cooked at a restaurant.

As pointed out in many threads, there are no decent curries available in CM. Thats why most people cook their own. This was just a very good alternative to cooking your own, and definately better than any restaurant in CM.

Which Rimping branch, Nim City?

To be sure, it's tough to find a good 'Ruby Murray' in Chiang Mai....

Thanks....

Don't agree. I've had good and very good curries in restaurants here. So have many other people, as pointed out in many threads. I do not have the need or inclination to buy overpriced frozen curries. Good luck to you if you do.

Having read the curry threads and tried many over the last 10 or so years here, the consensus seems to be the Chedi is best, the Whole Earth not bad but over rated, the rest also rans, though I personally do like Hinaly occasionaly.

I have not tried The Chedi, put would not call the Whole Earth cheap, though nice surroundngs, and ok nam bread.

Probably the best pork vindaloo I have ever eaten was at Hinlay. It costs 65 baht. Main items on the menu range from around 50 up to 90 baht. I have never been disappointed there. However, some people prefer frozen curries at twice the price which is their right of course.

I agree I enjoy the Hinlay too, but you are mistaken if you think they are cooked fresh. If I order Hinlay from meals on wheels I will order many dishes to freeze, and they often only have 2 of one and one of another. They are precooked and frozen in portions. The owner will even confirm this if you ask him.

Another good thing about Hinaly is that he does try to make a hot curry with his chicken phall, but it is still short of a good vindaloo for heat. He explains that you cannot use thai chillis as they are not hot enough and it is difficult to get the hotter chillis to grow here. I can concur on this having tried for 3 years with limited succes. Did manage a couple of scotch bonnet last year.
