Thailand chosen as the seat for 2006 global showcase of hygiene

BANGKOK: -- Exhibitors and visitors are expected to generate up to 600 million baht in revenue next year when Thailand plays host to the World Toilet Expo and Forum 2006. Despite its unglamorous name, the event is an important forum for discussing public health issues, say its organisers, the World Toilet Organisation and the Public Health Ministry. The 2006 event, from Nov 16-18, is expected to draw experts from 35 countries.

Apart from being a technical forum, the event will include a trade and educational expo for manufacturers to display the latest range of products and technology relating to toilet hygiene, ventilation, cleaning and water circulation systems.

The 2006 expo is the second after the first World Toilet Expo in China last April. The World Toilet Organisation, founded in 2001 has 47 members from 35 countries. Improving toilets and related public facilities benefits the economy, founder Jack Sim says, because it would attract more tourists and cut spending on health care.

He said public toilets are a crucial indicator for the quality of life and the level of environmental hygiene of a country. The expo in Thailand would be a turning point for all Thais to improve the standard of public toilets, and to educate the public about hygiene.

In Thailand, toilets in hotels and department stores are of quite a good standard, but those in remote areas need to be improved for tourists and the community nationwide.

He said the first World Toilet Expo was held in China because the Chinese government wanted to send a message to the world that the country is concerned about hygiene and public health. China will organise the Olympics in 2008 and the World Expo in 2010.

Hosting the World Toilet Expo and Forum 2006 in Thailand will bring about international recognition for the standard of hygiene in public toilets in the country.

It will also re-emphasise Thailand's image as a top-class venue for international conferences and exhibitions, said Peerapong Oeusoonthornwattana, director-general of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

The Public Health Ministry stressed that hosting the World Toilet Expo and Forum 2006 in Thailand would show that public facilities in the country are well taken care of. Hosting such a large event will also highlight Thailand as a choice for international conferences.

....and can we anticipate a nationwide crack-down on improved toilets?

There's another gag to be had in there.. somewhere. :o (It'll come to you...)

Much as I think this is a very funny topic, and I do hate the "hole-in-the-ground-with-foot-grips" to stopyou sliding in.... I have to say I'm impressed with the "butt-spray" thingy in many regular (western) toilets in LOS.. VERY hygienic - if a bit messy - until you get the hang of it. :D Like the French bidets really.

Interested person: How does this toilet work?

Demonstrator: Well, you put your crackdown there.

Interested person: where?

Demontrator: Right on top of where the water swirls around?

Interested person: Oh, the hub?

Demonstrator : Yes, put your crack down on the hub.

Interested person: Oh, so it IS made in Thailand.

WOO-HOO!

A SNEAK PEEK

TOILET EXPO PREVIEW

I had the honor to get a sneak peek at what the Toilet Expo is all about. I thought I’d share some of the thrills and excitement that members here can look forward to. Ready? Okay, let’s take a little look-see tour.

Obviously, it helps to know where you’re going. There are helpful SIGNS pointing the way. You can go to the PUBLIC VIEWING DISPLAY. Or, if you feel the urge, you can head for the PUBLIC RESTROOM.

Any public facility will want to provide clear directions so people can easily find their way to the correct destination. Again, this is done by the use of SIGNS to identify the MEN'S Room, the WOMEN'S Room, and of course the SPECIAL HELP Rooms.

You never know when the urge might hit you. One of the exhibits solves that problem with the EMERGENCY TOILET. There’s no need to disrupt your activities when nature calls.

Any corporate business has the need to provide proper restroom facilities for its staff and employees. You’ll see and exhibit that covers it all with toilets to satisfy the needs of busy EXECUTIVES as well as the needs of MANAGEMENT & EMPLOYEES.

One handy display was especially designed with BARS & PUBS in mind. Another is particularly useful for CELEBRITIES.

For people who are sports minded, toilets have been cleverly designed to be suitable for COUNTRY CLUB GOLFERS and FISHING boats.

It wouldn’t be much of a Toilet Expo if the tools for clean up were not included. The experts of toilet science have come up with some innovative products to help you tidy up after the job has been done. Have to ever plopped yourself down and after relieving yourself find there’s no toilet paper in the tissue dispenser? The solution is to install a roll that lasts. It’s also handy for those really BIG JOBS. Occasionally, you may experience the need for something with INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH cleaning power. And for those times when you have really stubborn cling-ons, there’s a PRODUCT to take care of that problem too.

Finally, what would a Toilet Expo in Thailand be without an exhibit of the OLD RELIABLE STANDARD found in so many homes around the country?

See YOU at the EXPO!
