People have often said to me that Thailand is a third world country. I tell them that it isn`t a third world country but it does have third world politicians.

Buathong Thani housing est residents slam PT Nonthaburi MP for distributing expired products in relief bag;MP blames on prov authorities/TAN_Network

What PT is saying is:

MP's handing out goods displaying the proper ministry logo = bad.

MP's handing out goods with exchanged logo, promoting PT and or the individual MP = good.

Sums it up.

Tit for tat poltical gamesmanship. PTP and the reds have learned over time that whatever is done unto them do back unto your opponent. It either undermines the effevctiveness, ensures your opponent also takes a hit or as in many cases when you take the hit but your opponent doesnt backs up the double standard approach while undermining the credibility among the people of whatever state institute delivered the hit. This strategy has been going for some time now and has served Thaksin/PTP/reds extremely well in the latter way although less so in the prior two

The failure is ofcourse that there needs to be a valid complaint, otherwise they just look like clowns. As in this case.

It is about perception. That game has been won hands down by Thaksin. His opponents are pretty inept politically, or more to the point palying by poltical rules that became redundant several years ago and which the country will not move back to.

Wow. For once I actually agree with hammered. The Democrats are definitely trying to play a version of politics that is now gone forever from Thailand. They want to play by the rules. They want to use logic and reason and Oxford style debates to discuss the issues. These outdated concepts are clearly non functional in the current environment controlled by the demagogue Thaksin.

Thaksin has won because he is ruthless and has no sense of decency or moral rectitude. This is the red style of politics that the Democrats have been reluctant to adopt because it would mean they would have to descend to his level. Say anything. Lie like a rug. Ignore even any hint of shame or responsibility. If someone plays a video back to you of something you said that is incriminating, simply shove a blue paddle in their face, have them silenced and later sue them for defamation.

This is the new political style that the PT has brought to Thailand. If I was a PT supporter I would be absolutely ashamed to admit it, but apparently some of the pro Thaksin crowd are proud of this legacy.

Hooray for red democracy! Abhisit's ideals of reasoning, responsibility and peaceful debate are just so antiquated and undesirable after all.

PT has two kinds of supporters.

1 The people working in the rice fields who are absolutely sure Thaksin is going to get them 300 baht a day and

2 The people on Thaksins pay roll

It is indeed a sad day for Thailand when the except able way of governing is to apply double standards.

That dates back to when Thaksin was PM. It was OK for him to rob the public but no one else could do it. He ruled with a iron fist.:(

The "Tit for tat poltical gamesmanship."

is just the levers of power being pulled, pushed and turned, The game in it's natural state. Good taste, logic and facts, mean nothing versus the political expedience of the moment.

Well if he allowed others to decide what to steal, and when, and not send a percentage up the food chain to him, then there is 'less for him', and loss of control... he seems to LOVE control. Or more aptly, seems to LIVE to control.

So wrong it's almost funny. Please try studying some Thai political history. The Democrats regularly play dirty to try to gain power. Don't make the mistake of mixing up your own personal feelings for Mr Abhisit with the Democrat party as a whole.

You describe Thaksin as ruthless with no sense of decency. Yes, he is, but so are the Democrat party. You say they want to play by the rules, well i would too if they could always be interpreted for my own benefit. You accuse PT of bringing a new style of politics to Thailand. The main thing Thaksin affiliated parties have brought to Thailand is a sense of empowerment for the poor people (which naturally, they have manipulated for political gain). The corruption and lies have been here far longer than that.

As Thailand's oldest political party, doesn't the idea that the Democrats are some sort of shining example of moral decency strike you as...well, unlikely? Even if you know nothing at all from pre-2001, surely common sense alone would suggest there may be a 'few' skeletons in their closet? They are all politicians, and we know what politicians do best don't we? Lying, cheating and stealing.
