Transport Ministry Revises Investment of Suvarnabhumi Airport's Second Phase Development

The Transport Ministry ordered the Airports of Thailand to revise the budget of 62 billion baht to fund the second phase of the Suvarnabhumi Airport development, as Don Muang Airport requires restoration funds after the severe flooding.

After a meeting of the Air-Transport Integration Committee, chaired by acting Transport Permanent-Secretary Silpachai Jarukaseamrattana, the Airports of Thailand, or AOT, was ordered to revise its budget of 62 billion baht to fund the second phase of the Suvarnabhumi Airport development, as there is currently a need for restoration at Don Muang Airport which was seriously damaged from the severe flooding.

The AOT must follow through with the second phase expansion of the Suvarnabhumi Airport by completing only the necessary construction to support the expected increase in the number of passengers and flights.

The conclusion of the development plan must be submitted to the Air-Transport Integration Committee for further consideration by the end of December, and the Transport Ministry will later bring the issue to the Cabinet meeting.

The completion of the second phase of Suvarnabhumi Airport development, with a 62-billion baht budget, was to cover the construction of a tunnel connecting to a concourse, additional bays, new domestic passenger terminals, entrance and exit roads, and a car park.

The airport will be able to accommodate 60 million passengers per year, up from the current 45 million.

Bays will be added, from 120 to 148, and a car park will be expanded to accommodate 6,500 cars, up from the current 6,000 cars.
