Hi, My friend has a non B education visa that expires on the 11th of Dec. Does he just go to the immigration office on Samui to extend it or does he have to do a border bounce ? Thanks in advance.

The Non-Immigrant ED Visa give him the right to enter Thailand, usually once (single entry). At the entry point he will have been granted permission to stay, usually 90 days. At the end of that period he has to either leave Thailand or obtain an extension from the local immigration office. If he wants to continue studying in Thailand he needs to get documents to extend his stay from whatever educational institution got him the visa in the first place.

Depends what he's studying and what kind of school/university.

Otherwise, yes a border run by land (15 days) or air (30 days).

I've always assumed that you can get a re-entry permit from immigration with a single entry Non-Ed - the 1,900 Baht stamp. Is that true? I've just never seen it mentioned definitively.

A re-entry permit is available but has nothing to do with this thread as it does not result in any longer stay than is current in your passport - it just keeps that stay alive for a return before it ends. You would return with the same permitted to stay date and have to leave or extend at the same time as before travel.

What would be the possible use of a re-entry permit to the OP?

A re-entry permit is only for use with a "permission to stay" it has nothing whatsoever to do with a visa, Non-Ed or otherwise.

Lopburi3's answer was clear and to the point.
