I am soon moving to Bangkok (Jan 06) and would like to fulfill my lifetime ambition (one of many) to play the alto saxophone. Can someone give me pointers to a tutor and reputable seller of saxophones?

Buy your Saxophone in your own country. When i have been looking in Thailand they are not as cheap as in the UK (for the same quality).

No matter what anybody tells you, you don't have to go straight out and buy a Selmer or Yamaha, spending lots of money. There are plenty of excellent Chinese models around, that suit a student very well. Progress onto a more expensive make later on.

What i would advise though, is to buy a very good mouthpiece, ligature and reeds. Many beginners don't realise the importance of these but believe me, you can make a crap Sax sound wonderful with a nice mouthpiece etc.

There are also many excellent video's and books for beginners. You've got 2 months before you go, so get them bought now and start practising :o

Sounds extremely expensive, more than i thought but there are many different types of makes of Sax. If you give me the name of the manufaturer and model, i'll do a comparison of prices in the UK. Don't know how they compare to Italy though.

It is a Yamaha YAS 275 Alto Sax.

Once again thanx for all the help.

That's about right for a Yamaha YAS275, Phano.

You don't need to start on one as good as that but if it's what you want, then it is a nice one. When you do buy it, insist that they give you a Yamaha plastic 5C mouthpiece and a Rovner Evo-5 Ligature.

That will be the best set up for you to begin with. They often throw in the mouthpiece and Ligature that come with the Sax but this will just make it harder for you to learn.

Here is a little write up on the 275.

"Yamaha YAS275 Alto Sax

Yamaha’s 275 series saxes offer a perfect introduction to the world of the saxophone. Whether a beginning student, or an advanced player needing a doubling instrument, the 275 series saxes offer surprisingly high quality features at a student model price.

Free blowing and nice light action, this is a great instrument for serious beginners and ideal for students at an intermediate standard who don't want to part with a lot of cash.

Steve Birtwistle says: "I've always been a fan of Yamaha student saxes as I learned on one myself. They are very well made and I never had any problems with mine. The 275 is easy to play and will make learning the saxophone good fun"

Happy blowing
